Work on the Range

A neighbor had an old frame to a two-person swing and I claimed it when they said it was trashed. They live a quarter mile away so I picked it up with my tractor and brought it home.

The problem is it doesn’t sit level when strung from the top.

Here you really see how tilted it is. Since the shooting line is lower the back is almost a 90 degree hit and will richochet the bullet straight back to the shooter.

It’s still much too muddy so I’ll have to wait a few weeks to do more work on it. Not only is the range currently not very functional it’s also ugly.

I bungee’d the back up and tried it. While it worked I don’t think it’s a long term solution. I’m thinking this will be a better paper target hanger.

I’m thinking of ordering some 3/8” AR500 gongs. The target line is 35 to 50 yards from the firing line and 20 feet higher. Since they hang straight down any richochets should be back and high.

Try Shooting 7 Targets. They have hangers that hang the targets to deflect bullets to the ground.

I have a couple gong stands perched on slope, resulting in the plates hanging almost vertical. I was worried about ricochets. In the first picture here you can see the how the gong from the factory was hung with short bolts where it attached to the chain. I replaced the short bolts with longer ones, shifting the center of gravity of the gong and tilting it at more pronounced angle.

Looks like a nice project. It seems like a piece of angle iron or something could be mounted to run across the top, instead of the black cord running across the top. Then, you could either mount the trap to the angle iron or hang it from the angle iron. Mounting would probably make it more sturdy yet less movable. Hanging would allow for a quicker change of pace, in case you wanted to hang a different type of target. However, it seems like either way would work fine.
