Out in the shop and sanding. Box works great. Not only does the suction draw down the sawdust, but tends to hold flat pieces in place.

Had a lot of projects around the house to take up my time and haven't been back at these cutting boards for several weeks, but in the last two days, I did find the time to do more sanding, and to take the "step" off the side. I decided I didn't like that transition, so a half hour on each with a plane and it was gone. :) 80 grit, 120, 180, 220, and 320 gives a glass smooth finish. Then time to apply the mineral oil and BOOM, the grain leaps out.

Can't decide which one I like best, but I am leaning toward the Walnut one on the right.

The board on the left has a walnut edge, then mainly pecan, with some maple accents, with the purple heart strips in the center.

The board on the right is Walnut and spalted maple, with the purple heart and mahogany center accent. Yeah... my fav.
:)

A favorite anyone? Anyone?
;)

These have two applications of Mineral Oil, and two coats of beeswax/mineral oil buffed in. They will likely get one more coat of wax applied and buffed out. It will give them a light sheen. Then I'll apply the feet and we'll be done. Whoever gets them will get a small Tin of the wax/oil mixture. They are suitable for use, but most folks I have given them to don't use them, but put them on a counter with something displayed on them. :)

Amazing what you do Jim! Just hope you don't forget and over do it. I have been guilty of forgetting about the limitations/guidelines regarding my back, and have paid the price! I DO admire your perseverance very much though!☺

Both boards are beautiful, but the board on the right is outstanding and easily gets my vote. Thanks for sharing your skill and craftsmanship with us, Marine. I look forward to each new project and read every single post.

I'm a sucker for the purple heart. I am going for the one on the left. Both are beautiful. Wonderful craftsmanship!!

I caught purple heart on sale at woodcraft, something like 40% off. I was going to buy a piece or two, to use as accents in cutting boards and boxes. When I called in the order, Miss T told me to get 50 or 60 bucks worth. "They don't throw it on sale often, that oughta last you."
