I watched the entire video with great interest. The man obviously loves his work, and his philosophy regarding life lessons is worth noting. Thanks for the link.

Interesting link for sure! I have a friend who does this, but have never gone to watch him at work.
This inspires me to do so. Kinda looking for a nice slab anyway.

Interesting video. I only jumped around here and there, but would like to watch the whole thing when time allows. He is an interesting person for sure.

Just wondering if all his efforts on this particular project was worth it financially? If he said, I missed that part.

My good friend sawed for years. Traditional sawmill powered by a Detroit Diesel. I don't believe that he liked anything over 24 Inch in diameter though.

I too have a couple of friends who run their own sawmills .... both small scale operations which started out as a way to get some lumber for their own projects .... both have told me that they did make some money but had no interest in larger operations with which they could make a living ....

I don't remember him saying what he was paid for that particular job. He has another video "Can you make $1 million a year with a sawmill business?"

The metal is a problem. Those big blades ain't cheap. I've done some similar, but much smaller slabbing of various hardwoods, on a 14" vertical bandsaw, and run into a bullet or 2 a couple times. It will get your attention.

He said blade replacement was his biggest expense. Hitting a chunk of metal like he did in the first video really cuts into your profits.

The sawyers I've used around here usually won't take "yard trees" for that reason. The pro's will also have a built in metal detector that will shut the machine down if it senses any metal, before the blade hits it. It's still a pain in the rear tho because you have to back out, and that's generally not a good idea with a band saw. Can bind and kink if the kerf closes up, or get pushed off the tires. I keep some wooden wedges handy if I have to back out of a cut.

Safety issue too. I've killed some chain saw blades. Fortunately never broke a chain saw blade. But I've learned to cut really low or high to avoid fastners someone thought a live tree would make a good fence post for.
