Ameteur radio (HAM)

Post by dasmoeturhead » Mon Dec 30, 2019 12:41 pm

Amateur Radio (Ham) anybody?
I've been a Ham since 2013. I absolutely love this hobby.
I took a Technician class in 2013, then passed the tech exam. Then we travelled for 2 years, and ham radio took a backseat. I didn't have time to install my mobile prior to this adventure. Once settled in TN I studied and passed the General class exam in 2017. I studied more and advanced to Amateur Extra Class Sept this year.
Yea Haw. Now I'm in the process of learning Morse Code (CW). I'm learning quick.
Anyway I was wondering if anybody else on the forum is a Ham.

I no longer bear hunt, but still have my radio.
Maybe you can help me understand the capabilities/limitations of it. As I understand, it is kind of a mini HAM...dunno.
Would like to put it to some type of use though.
It is a Vertex Standard VX-150 VHF FM Tranceiver.

Never took the class but I use to have a couple of Kenwood TS-50's. Had one in the truck when I was still on the road and used it on lower sideband. Met alot of nice folks and talked to quite a few places.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I know what Ya mean Al.
As far as CB's go; when I was on the road, was using my late brother's Cobra 148- GTL with upper and lower SB.
Enjoyed it, and still have that radio.

Since 1972 (crap, that makes me old). VA6SZ and VA6TTT. Unfortunately, the shooting sports has taken over my hobby time. I haven't been active for almost 10 years. My station is in rather poor condition. At its best, I had 14 different antennas with 4 towers. I was active on all bands from 160m to 1.2GHz. My main interests were contesting and weak signal digital work. Among my accomplishments, the one that I'm the proudest of, is working 4 different countries on 1.2GHz via moon bounce with WSJT from my patio table with 2 cross polarized yagis and 10 watts (Italy, Japan, USA, and Brazil). Not bad for being above 53° latitude.

Thank you. Any recommendations on what I should do with it? Still works like new.

Do you have a ametuer radio license? You need to be at least a Technician to legally transmit with it, but you can listen all you want without one.
You could program it for a police, utility, weather scanner.
If you live in a area that has lots of 2m or 440 repeaters you can listen to them. There's a lot you can do with it.
It's a 5 watt radio just like most all hand held. It's not going to get out to far without the use of a repeater. A repeater receives your signal, and then re tranmits it at a higher power allowing you to go 100 or so miles or more. You usually have to program a certain tone you be able to transmit on a reapeater.
Look,up repeater book. It will list all the repeaters in your area.

Thanks for the info dasmoeturhead!
I think it would be interesting to set it up for scanning, but will have to figure out how to do that. Don't really have a need to get out too far with it right now, but would be interesting in the future. I appreciate you and all the other Ham operators out there though. Some form of communication in the event of a crisis is a good thing.
