True synthetic is not made out of a petroleum oil.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

From what I could find on the web even full synthetic is still made from petroleum, just more refined and also changes made in a lab.

"Full synthetic, or 100 percent synthetic oils, are usually extracted from crude oil or a byproduct of the same. In the case of Pennzoil, they have figured out how extract synthetic oil from natural gas.

Refining
Just like conventional oil, synthetics are refined. From there, the differences become apparent as synthetic motor oil is distilled and purified, before it is reduced to its basic molecules. The process extracts more impurities than what is found in conventional oils while enabling individual molecules to be customized to work with today’s sophisticated machinery."

Oil threads are dangerous because they often develop into a big fight. Im not going there with this one all Im going to say is there is a lot of false advertising when it comes to the degree of synthetic oil one is buying. I know ditto wanted to know if its made out of oil. I only assume he wanted to know out of crude oil. But there are different classes of the finished product.

Interesting article, if I read it right it seems that Amsoil is the only widely available true full synthetic oil.

I have a 06 Miata with just over 50k miles. I plan on keeping it indefinitely, since retiring I put less than 5000 miles on it annually, I change the oil and filter yearly now. I've used Mobil One in it since new, wonder if it would be worthwhile to change to Amsoil.

About $80 for 5 qts. Amsoil and filter vs. $35 for Mobil One and Wix and could possibly get away with going 2 years between changes. If it would still extend the engine life like they say even though not using it for the first 50k it would be probably be worth it.

I've used Mobil-1 full synth in my Explorers and now in my new Edge. Got 213k out of my last Explorer. There may be 'better' synthetics out there but I'm sold on Mobil-1.
