Re: Ford 8N
We call them that too around here and I notice that you are also from VA.tractortad wrote:Round here we call those "red bellied Fords" (except that one is grey). They drive just like an old pickup truck - great old tractors...
Although I believe it is a nation-wide term.
The early Fords, starting in '39 were all Gray. Not sure when Ford changed to Red and Gray, but a lot of the re-paints got the newer colors (could have been the dealers wanting them to look newer, lol).

Re: Ford 8N
Necro-thread revival.
I just bought a Ford 9N manufactured in 1939.
The guy I bought it from gave me 3 different manuals for the thing.
One was a reprinted owners manual while the other 2 were shop manuals.
The one shop manual states very clearly that it is intended for use with the 8N model, but that most of the information in the manual would transfer to both the 9N and the 2N.
Mine has been converted to 12 volt negative ground, instead of the 6volt positive ground it originally had.
Just last week I fired it up and used it to drag the largest deer I've ever harvested (a very respectable 9 point buck) up a long hill and out of our new property.
This was the reason I bought this tractor, to haul deer out of a woods that would be all but impossible to pull out by hand.
That old 9N did exactly what I asked it to do and had plenty to spare.
I gave $450 and a used Braztec .357mag lever action rifle for the tractor, and I think I got a deal.

Re: Ford 8N
I also think that is a 9N. I have a 1947 8N with a Superior loader with a snow bucket and a blade that I use to maintain the drive winter and summer. I also have a 1952 Jubilee which most folks will say, "No, it has to be a 53 because that was when they came out." It is a 52 however. They started the production run in the fall of 52. Her serial number is 500. I use it as a yard tractor to move my boat and trailer around. If you need parts go to Stiener Tractors online. They have everything.

Re: Ford 8N
Glad I don’t have to revive this rpthread;). An 8N just came up for sale near me. The seller is claiming it’s a ‘54, but since it looks nothing like a ‘54, I’m going to say it’s an 8N. The difference I see between the 8 & 9, is the front of the hood has what appears to be a slant in the raised moulding, and bigger front hubs on the 9. The 8 has a flat moulding and smaller front hubs.
Top is one for sale for $650. It apparently needs a battery and carb rebuild, but was running when parked a couple of years ago. I’d really like to go buy it, but I would be shot if I did. I have way too many projects already!
Middle is 8N and bottom is 9N.

Also the location of the hole in the radiator cowling. In your 9N picture a hole is bottom center of the cowling. In both of your 8N pictures a hole on the right side bottom of the cowling.

I noticed that too mags, but wasn’t sure what the hole is for so didn’t mention it. I feel like I should have one of these. Maybe just to move around the 9 trailers I have, and maybe some plowing, and maybe some mowing, and maybe some...

I believe those are for a manual hand crank. Good to have when the battery is dead.

Re: Ford 8N
That makes sense. I wonder how hard it would be to find original style headlights?
