Stock care

Post by timcondra1 » Sat Nov 23, 2019 11:05 am

I was hunting the other day in the Snow and something occurred to me. How do you protect your finish from the elements? I also noticed that when I moved the rifle around there was a reflection like a signal mirror. Is there any way to avoid this without hurting the brass?

I have often thought about that. In the old west, rifles saw all kinds of weather in all seasons. Must have been a lot of wet firearms back then that got wiped off and back in use. Someone way back early on this forum said they dunked them oil barrels but I don't know. With my 1860 Henry, I just keep it wiped down with an oily rag, and let the brass go to a patina all on it's own. It gets packed horseback a lot and has been snowed on a few times. I bought it to use it.

.
Renaissance Wax for care. Letting it Patina as already suggested to cut the glare. But didn't your Henry come with a receiver sock?

If you'll worry about glare from the receiver, or water damage while out hunting, put a light coat of wax over the receiver and let it dry. Don't buff it off. Go hunt. The haze of the wax will prevent glare, and moisture will run off. After the hunt, apply a second, light coat of wax, and rub it in well, which will help soften the dry coat underneath. Buff both out. Apply brass polish and buff to high shine.

You can also wax the stock, a couple good coats, lightly buffed, should keep it protected from the elements. ;)
