I hunt deer with my .357 BBSC in tighter woods, and the .44-40 is not far off in power, is it?

RR, it may not make it into the guide, but they clearly imply you can take deer with it!

Maybe a reference to Westchester County and Long Island.

I can't use it here in NY because we are not suppose to have it.

Jim
I know NY has some strict gun laws, but “not supposed to have” a lever action rifle? Really? What IS allowed in NY?

I believe the OP may be referring to cartridge number limits in rifles and shotguns.
I recall reading once lever action rifles cannot hold more than five rounds and have to be permanently altered as such but the OP can probably provide the correct answer.

Wow. And people think Canada has restrictive gun laws! Our mag capacities are 10 for handguns, and semi-auto centerfire is 5. Any other action is a skies the limit type deal. I’m not saying our laws make sense, but they are a lot less of a pain than people think.

Most guns in CT are restricted to a ten round maximum magazine; however, lever action rifles do not have that restriction, but...

Hunting for deer with a centerfire rifle is only allowed on private land that is ten acres or larger; otherwise, on public land, hunting deer is restricted to single shot muzzle loaders or three cartridge shotguns using slugs (one in the chamber and two in the magazine) during firearms hunting season(s). No centerfire rifles are allowed on public land.

Small game (coyote, rabbit, squirrel, raccoon, opossum, crow) can be hunted on public land with a rimfire rifle during the firearms hunting season(s); again, with no magazine limits on lever action guns (fully loaded Henry's are OK).

Deer are the only large game animals available to hunt in our state; although Black Bears are likely to be included in the future, given their ever-increasing population.

you can only have a rifle that holds 10 rounds or less to be legal to own in NY. That includes lever actions. You can not load more than 5 shells if you hunt with it. If it can hold more than 10 but can be altered to only hold 10 then it is ok. There is no altering an 1860 rifle. Mine is in 45 colt and would make a great hunting rifle where I hunt.
