Henry Frontier Magnum

Post by 270 » Thu Mar 21, 2019 8:52 pm

I have a Henry Frontier 22 magnum rifle. At 25 yards and off a bench it will scatter its shots all over a 10 by 12 target. I can put a couple of holes together and then I get several flyers 6 to 8 inches away. Could be above, below or wide of the bull. I have tried three different scopes, two different sets of rings and five different brands of ammo with varying bullet weights. The cleaning of the bore made no difference. Anyone else have this problem?

First, Welcome to the Forum. Second, sorry to hear of your issues. There are 22Mag owners here who will chime in soon, but I'm not one of them. Sounds like you've tried to cover all the bases as to what might make things better.
The one thing I didn't notice was what kind of platform/sled/bag set-up are you shooting from while at the bench? How many shots in each group of each variable? Indoors or outdoors?
You'll get help in figuring things out, but these are likely questions others may have, too.
Welcome again!

Take a good look at your bore, or have a true gunsmith do so. I have read, on "rare" occasions, some have found irregular scarring down the bore. I stand behind Henry though, so I hope that is not the case!!
Also, what Esquared mentioned and welcome from here as well!

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I do have another Henry in 22 long rifle. Shoots fine off same bench and bags as the magnum. No issues with it at all.

That makes it different, I'd say. What these guys above have said: Call Henry and I'm sure photos of your target(s) would be helpful, as would a list of the ammo used. They won't hassle you, they'll take care of you.

I had similar problems.
You should call HRA.
Others have reported issues with specific brands and weights.

I just got my .22mag rifle back from Henry. It was making key-hole hits on paper at anything over 10 yards. CCI shot the best groups, Hornady the worst.

Somewhere between 300 and 500 rounds the rifle started key-holing every brand of ammo. I sent it back to Henry in NJ. The bore looked like it had "stretch marks" running from breech to muzzle.

Others at the Austin Rifle Club have had a similar experience, usually around 1200 shots. Once Henry replaces the barrel it shoots fine and your troubles are over. It will take about two months for the entire process - Informing Henry, they send you a UPS label, travel time, repairs and return time. No FFL fees or shipping fees. In fact it is an easy process - much easier than I thought it would be.

Lots of speculation why this happens, no good answers. Henry will take care of the problem - start with their customer service department.

Mine came back with new barrel, new sights, new wood - looks like a new rifle, but has the same serial number.
