Got my new Big Boy butt stock cover today

Post by ditchparrot » Fri Jun 08, 2018 11:09 pm

This arrived today and I laced it on as soon as I got home from the post office. I'm really, really happy with it! I like the way it looks and I love the feel of the leather against my cheek and shoulder when I mount it.

The impetus for getting it stemmed from a bit of a fiasco that occurred a couple of weeks ago. I was at a local range on a day when the wind was blowing pretty hard, and I unzipped the orange soft case and left the rifle in it on the on the bench after I made it safe by opening the action and taking out the loading tube.

Well, a gust of wind blew through that was powerful enough to lift up the lower side of the case and spill everything onto the concrete below. the only real damage was a big chip out of the stock, right next to the toe just above the brass butt plate.

I found the big part of the chip and was able to glue it back in, but I just didn't like the look of it. That's when I decided to order the leather cover -- it would make it so I couldn't see the ding and also act as a protector on that end for future (hopefully not!) mishaps.

Word to the wise: Always ground your rifles directly on the shooting bench and not lying in an unzipped case.

Nice-looking leather stock cover; I also didn't know Henry made one with their motto on it. Very cool. 8-)
Sure shows off Henry Proud! :D

Yes, there are those "damage dangers" whenever the Henry is out and about. My son-in-law once was shooting my BBB .357, and it accidently got knocked over at the range. The stock was okay, but there was a 3-1/4" scrape along the right sight of the forend.

This happened back in 2016, and I posted the support I got from Henry on that damaged forend. You might even want to contact Henry CS to see if they might help you out with a replacement stock. Here is my story about the great recovery on the damage, which Henry did for me. (Not sure, but this link might not open in a new window, and move you temporarily off the Forum). PT7

Wow, that seems like a strong wind. Nevertheless, the cover looks nice!

I had a similar thing happen with mine but mine was a scratch in the wood that occurred while cleaning the gun in my basement. I happened to zig when I should have zagged and run the stock up against a press or something mounted on a bench. I like the Henry cover and yours looks good. After doing this Im not so sure I wouldnt of done it anyway as I like the looks of the stock covers.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I’ve considered getting one of those because the brass butt plate is slippery. Also, bug spray from my shirt will cause damage to the brass. I’ve had to polish it several times because of that. My only concern is this: will the leather cover cause discoloration in the wood stock or corrosion on the brass?

When I used a stock cover I slipped a piece of cotton from an old t-shirt under to protect the brass. I don't use a cover on my 1860. Even though I have a nice one from Ricochet Roy.
