I finally made it to the range today. Worked on the 223. I brought 55 grain Eagle, 62 grain Eagle, 75 grain Eagle, all in 223. I also brought 62 grain Federal 5.56 bulk, and 75 grain 5.56 Hornady Superformance Match. I started the session with the 7/16 spacer and the greased factory springs on the stock bolt. 3 1/2 lb trigger pull. All 3 Eagle rounds fired flawlessly. The Federal and Hornady would not fire. I then replaced the 7/16 spacer with the 1/4. The Federal bulk fired but the “expensive’ Hornady Match still did not pop. I then removed the spacer all together and with the factory “greased” springs the Hornady Match still did not go off. I included a pic of the 3 dimples on the Hornady primers. Starting on the left with the 7/16 spacer and middle 1/4 and on the right no spacer at all. This is how particular both these Henrys’ are. A friend of mine who is a avid reloader, says that Hornady primers are extra hard. I guess. I am going with the 1/4 spacer in the 223. I gives me a very nice and predictable 3lb 11oz trigger pull. I am very happy with the accuracy of the Eagle 62 grain and it is pretty inexpensive as well. I have had issues with other Hornady ammo in the past and I’m done with it. The 308 likes the Federal Premium 168 grain. Thank you

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I agree it should have gone off. I reworked the the 2 hammer springs that are in front of the stock bolt. Degreased everything. I have been working on spring piston airguns for decades. Dampening the spring with grease does wonders for the firing behavior however it does affect the velocity. I have included some pics of the factory spring ends on both the large and small spring. The small spring has a rough grind on the ends but the large spring has no flat grind at all. I ground the flats on the large spring and super polished both large and small spring ends. To a mirror finish. Then polished the bolt end that pushes against the small spring. This is an attempt to have full power without grease and no spring noise when cocking the hammer. Before and after pics are posted. Very smooth cocking on both the 308 and 223. No noise, no binding. Full factory spring power. I will try the Hornady Match again and see if it fires. I will keep you posted with the results. The first 2 pics are of the small/large spring untouched. The next 2 are after reworking. The last is of the 2 springs and the end of the stock bolt after polishing. Thanks. Have a blessed day!

Really interesting work! I think you've hit on the reason why a few of the early single shots (my 45-70, for example) came out of the box with pretty darn good triggers. I'll go with more care in assembly, fit, and maybe even a little polishing ;) . For sure, the last two I worked on needed help, and my .243 has an OK trigger, it could no doubt use the trigger work you've shown us. Great posts.

I finally made it to the range and brought the .223 with the polished factory springs,no grease, no spacers, and a super polished trigger/sear engagement. The rifle fired all the different brands it was fed. Even the dimpled Hornady’ went bang. I think this is the best trigger for the Henry Single Shot. 3lbs 10oz, no creep, fast lock time, no hammer cocking noise, smooth hammer cocking, fires everything. Thank you

These rifles are very quick and handy. Feels great in the hands. Compact and very solid. I am impressed so far with the accuracy of the .308. I’m still working with the .223. When I get the best rounds figured out, for each rifle, I post the results.
