.50 Cal. Single shot

Post by Hidden Mortimer » Thu Mar 28, 2019 1:28 pm

Just another subject to talk about. What are the chances Henry will make a single shot in one of the big 50’s? 500 s&w 500 linebaugh or 500 JHR? Would they have to redo the barrel? Maybe simply not thin it down so much. What do you think?

Single shot elephant gun tells me two things,

1) You're hunting something big and dangerous.

2) You don't want to miss.

I know from experience with my 500 S&W, a long gun would definitly help control the abuse that my revolver puts out. That's why I no longer shoot it! :o

The still have their "Suggestion Box" on the Henry website, yes? Take the plunge and post a note to them, see what they say!

But, like others, I'm curious: what would you do with it?

That $400 Single Shot would need a $4,000 scope to do it justice!

I would just shoot it. I think it would be fun to have and load for. I already went to the site and put a suggestion. Since there are no loading dies for the other two I can settle for the 500 s&w. H&R made one in the same caliber so I figured why not Henry too.

I have to laugh when I see ads fo .500 S & W guns for sale - most reference something like ‘only ten rounds fired’
Personally I do not own any gun that is not an ‘all day shooter’

I have a Super Redhawk Alaskan .480R and would love a Big Boy Steel in this caliber. It's a terrific and under appreciated cartridge with tolerable recoil. It would be a great camp gun and would be bad medicine for bears. I should have bought a Rossi Puma Stainless carbine years ago when they did come that way. I don't see any need for a single shot. If I were hunting hogs, for example, I sure would like a rapid follow up shot, or three.

Maybe the reason I never went for the Rossi was the cockeyed sight (or mag tube) in this pic.

A really big bore makes the gun light for easy carry (the Puma was just 6 pounds), but I imagine a .500 S&W hot load would just about send the stock through your collar bone.

TC makes the 500 S&W in the Encore platform. Can get barrels from them or MGM in either pistol or rifle lengths. As for me, the 45-70 in the Encore is plenty. Can go as to as you want/can stand in the Encore, but can go as light as you want, too. Ain't no cowboy action loads in the 500 S&W. :)
