Skinner receiver sight, Lyman 17A globe combo

Post by wolfman » Wed Feb 27, 2019 4:56 pm

Pondering a Skinner receiver mounted aperture sight for my Henry SS-357. Will have to get something taller up front, since the receiver sight will sit higher than the factory buckhorn that sits on the tapering portion of the barrel:

Skinner sells a ramp that will raise the factory buckhorn sight, so was leaning that direction. Then this little gem came in the mail:

It's a Lyman 17AML that I ordered to replace the broken front sight post on a Mossberg 44US(c). Wheels started turning when I took it out of the package, wondering if it might also work on the Henry with the Skinner receiver sight. The dovetail is correct, and it does look like it'll sit higher than the factory front:

Going to press on & order the Skinner. Will leave the Lyman off the Mossberg until then, & try it on the Henry first. Will report back with results.
Lyman also makes a taller version (17ATC). It's quite a bit taller, so I'm hoping it doesn't end up that the AML is too short & the ATC too tall. May just have to go with the ramp/factory front if that's how it works out.

What Lyman calls the "AMI" is .494" high. Not sure about "AML". TractorTad has probably the most experience with Skinner/Lyman set-ups, so I'll let him chime in (or you could send him a PM), and he's the best to advise as well on the barrel-mounted Skinner.

I went with the Skinner LoPro on my BBS, with the Lyman AMI (I believe, and I'll double-check) and it worked out great. I have a post that I'll dig up and paste in here, as well.

Thanks for that info ESquared, this one appears to be marked both AMI & AML if my eyes are seeing this right:

More I look at it though, don't think it's going to be quite high enough.

Just got an email response from Rob at Skinner - he says the height range needed with the Henry/H&R/NEF receiver sight is 0.650"-0.750", & recommended the Lyman 20MJT. Going to get one on order.

Looks like the 17A will take it's rightful place on the 44US after all!

Rob at Skinner is great to work with. You tell him what you've got, he does the math and PRESTO! Great "tech advice", that's for sure.

Glad you got it squared away. Please keep us posted on both projects!

There are some sight height calculators on the 'net. Brownells site has one as well as Marble's site and Skinner's as well.

Hey Wolfman - I think you are definitely going in the right direction with a Skinner rear/Lyman Globe front setup for your Henry. We have Skinner rear peep/Lyman Globe front setups on 10/13 of our Henrys and they work great. We have a Lyman 20MJT Globe on our 45-70 CCH Henry and it works great, but it is a lot larger than the Lyman 17A Globes - in fact they have a bigger diameter than the barrel(muzzle end) on your 357 single-shot. Ours looks kind of big even sitting on the end of that big octagon barrel on our CCH45-70 - it may look like a little too much globe on the end of your fine looking single-shot....

I think I am going to really like the Lyman globe I got from Esquared.
I only managed to get out last Saturday for a few impromptu shots at a beer can on a stump about 80 yards out and resting on the hood of my 4Runner but the results were promising!
First shot was low and hit the snow the can was setting on and blew it off the stump. Second shot I raised the sights with what you see as the result.
As soon as the great blizzard of 2019 clears I want to get out with bench & paper to really see what they will do.
Oh, I put the globe on my '66 Winchester commemorative since I already know how well it shoots and figured it would be the best candidate to test it on.

Thanks all for the replies!

Got the 17A onto the 44US tonight, think it's gonna work out well. That old rifle has a lot of bumps & bruises on the stock & metalwork, but it shoots way better than it ought to.

Have really come to like aperture sights, looks like I'm not the only one :)

Bring up an older thread. Wolfman did you shoot the gun at all with the stock front sight and skinner rear? Just curious if it was to short.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......
