H015-223 with sight mod

Post by slofyr » Sat Feb 10, 2018 6:45 pm

Sometimes getting what you want requires doing it yourself. This is a H015 in .223 with Williams FP-HR-TK rear aperture sight, and GrovTec GTHM283 hammer extension. Both items needed some machining to function on this project. Williams does not currently make the FP for the Henry single-shot rifles, however they do make it for H&R’s similar Handi rifles. Both rifles have the same rear-sight hole spacing, but Henry’s are farther back causing the FP to contact the receiver. The GrovTec fits and works fine with the OEM rear sight, but needed to be modified to clear the FP's aperture disk. Up front is a Lyman 17ATC globe which required the usual fitting for a dovetail sight.

Excellent work and what a beautiful rifle! Love the wood. Love the peep/globe combo on a single shot. Have several single shots set up that way.

I've now had some time with this rifle. No matter how snug, the GrovTec GTHM283 continually slipped forward and was removed. Because of Henry's rebounding hammer design with the H015, the rifle has a horrendously stiff hammer pull and resulting heavy trigger. IMO, Henry really went overboard with spring tension and the length of the hammer's travel that is hindered by the rebound cycle. Seriously, my wife, whose hands till our garden, cannot pull the hammer back.

I've no doubt the rifle's accuracy could be improved with an action job. In spite of the quirks, it is still very nicely built and a joy to handle. Here is what I've been able to do with it, so far.

50 yards with Fiocchi 62gr FMJ.

what sight did you go back with ?

as a side note, our Henry 45-70 came with a 9+ lb trigger pull .... we just had a gunsmith work on it and it now has an outstanding 3.1 lb trigger pull .... that has been a marked improvement

I went with the Carlson hammer extender - also available from Henry - on my single shot 45-70. I haven't fired it since I put it on  , but I sure like how well it fit, and, being aluminum, it's light. I expect it to stay in place. The trigger pull is a lot less than the weight of the rifle, too, I got lucky. I guess. That .223 sure does shoot!

Did you have to lower the front sight? .852" seems like a bit tall.

The diameter of the breech end is considerable larger than the tapered muzzle, so the high reach up front is necessary.

This is the setting to hit center of a 3" SnC bullseye at 50 yds with a 6 o'clock hold.

Thanks for the update. I plan on doing something soon. I don't know if it will be the single. I haven't made up my mind. I thought I was going to pull the trigger on one and then got to looking at used Ruger M77's. I used to have one in .270 and really liked it.
