We have Jacks like those here in South Texas. They are ambush hunters, not good to eat.

I only "catch release" so I'm not bothered with "keepers". These jacks put up a good fight - they turn sideways and that flat side is hard to reel in.
Fishing on a piers I usually get a bite just as I'm about to lift the bait out of the water - it always surprises me and I've lost a few trying to set the hook with the drag too light. They have a tough mouth (hard to set the hook) and will usually sneak up on the bait rapidly - you have to fish the bait all the way in.\M
