We seriously considered the port/starboard bow lights for our kayaks years ago, but my son was on active duty with the Coast Guard at the time and advised against it. When I asked why, he told me to call the small boats liason in VA Beach and ask them.

They told us that only a white moored light was recommended for paddle craft, and other lighting wasn't recommended because powered craft were required to give way to non-powered craft. In low light, full lighting could mistakenly lead other power craft to believe you were under power and fail to yield.

We got the bright pole light. A bright hand held spot, and marked the hulls with reflective tape. We also had airhorns on both yaks.
The light kits you mentioned aren't prohibited, and many like them. Fishing where we did around that channel, we passed. Lol. Wasn't worth the risk.

Between the lights and the solas tape, you can see the kayak is well lit... :D

You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.
