The one that got away, after picture thankfully

Post by daytime dave » Mon Sep 25, 2017 7:56 am

I went fishing Saturday morning. I had live crickets, night crawlers, my tackle box, three poles all set up differently. I was ready. The most useful gadget is proving to be the portable fish finder. It shows the depth, temperature, weeds and terrain. It's great for finding the slopes.

I caught the largest bass I have ever caught and landed. I was using a blue soft plastic worm in a weedless rig. What a slobaholic. He was a little over four pounds and 22+". He was a prize. He joined the others on the metal stringer. Dinner would be selected from the stringer later. A couple of hours later, I came back in and guess who was missing? He had bent the metal out of the clip. What a brute. I'll keep that in mind next time I decide to keep a bruiser.

Here is the proof.

Ha! Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm glad that one got away from you before it hit the frying pan. A fish of that size in your region carries some good genes that should be kept in the pool – it took quite a few years to reach that size in a place with a short growing season. Eat the smaller ones – some of them might have the right genes, but they haven't established that yet, and it's almost always helpful for any bass fishery to remove some of the smaller members of the population, as they outcompete the bigger ones for the food.

I make my living in the bass fishing industry, so my perspective might be different than some.

ditchparrot,

Thank you for that viewpoint. I was thinking by removing him, someone else could grow into the role. I guess I'm glad that he escaped.

I usually catch and release after a photo, but this day was going well and I was going to have a fish fry. Half way into the drive back, I got into cell phone range and found out we were going to dinner with our neighbors. Oh well, fresh frozen. Had I known that before, I would have let them all go after photos.

I have a close friend that's a fishin magician. He takes me along just so he has entertainment whiles hes reelin them in. This sounds like my luck when I go fishin. I'm always ending up with a line hornets nest or losing my lures. I'm just no good at fishin. I think if I catch more that 4 or 5 its just cause the fish in that lake are just that starved. I watch my friend most of the time reel in 10 or 12 and I'm lucky to have 2 landed. Oh well I still have fun. Al

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Just going is more than half the fun Al. When I get a birds nest in the bait caster or tangle the bejeesh out of the sinker on the end of the spinning pole, I usually remember to take a moment to look around and remember where I am. In the Adirondacks. Forever wild and free. If I need to destress more because I cut out half the birds nest, I hook up the wireless buds and put on George Winston and look around again. Instant peace and tranquility.
I can go into a fishing / beauty trance on a nice day.

I'm looking forward to the next trance. :D
