Not fly fishing
Not fly fishing
I have been in Nebraska for the last month. Visiting kids, grandkids and others. I don't get a lot of fly fishing in while I am here. However, I can drown worms with the best of them. Have had some luck on the local lakes. I brought home a couple of good walleye two weeks ago. And the picture below is from last Thursday morning. I had hoped for some more walleye but the weather did not cooperate, it was very windy. So I went to the local canal, a regular spot. These catfish and a couple of drum made my morning. The two large ones weighed in at a little over 6 pounds each.
My grandkids have said they love it when grandpa cooks catfish. Tonight I deep fat fried large bite-size pieces and that met with good success.
I will be heading back to the lake this next week looking for those elusive walleye. We will see about that. In another week or so I am heading back to Colorado. And then the flyfishing begins....

Re: Not fly fishing
casting for largemouth bass has always been my favorite form of fresh water fishing but arthritis now makes it impossible .... I've gotten interested in trolling for walleyes and really enjoy it .... for my money, walleye and crappie are the best eating fresh water fish .... congrats on your catch

Just north of Seward. Acreage allowing dirt bikes and guns! Where are you from? We lived in Crete for 15 years.
My mother was raised in Appleton, I have many cousins up north.

I grew up mostly in Lincoln, but as an adult lived in Kearny and a few years out west in Sydney. In-laws lived in Crete, but later retired in Florida. Hunted and fished, widely, across entire state. Canoed every major river, there, too. Much more to the state than what people see driving across it on the Interstate. I do miss those prairies and wide open spaces.

Mom taught us that where ever you are there is good stuff. That is certainly true in Nebraska. Thank you for the reminisces.

My favorite saddle shop is in Kearney. Platte Valley Saddle. Lyle and Linda Henderson. Lyle has built lots of gear for me since the early 80's. He built my custom saddle in 2005. Nice folks, and I was in the shop for a visit back in 1983. Beautiful country in Nebraska. Rode in the sand hills. Think it was 94F that day....not too many trees around.

Re: Not fly fishing
I am camping about 140 miles nw of Kearney right now. On a small water called Pine Creek. Caught a few small trout on a flyrod. Beautiful evening. Taking the long way to Denver. Through the panhandle into Wyoming. Hitting any moving water that strikes my fancy.
Most trips I take the interstate. Not this time. Moseying my way along. Going to make it a three day trip, camping and fishing. It is beautiful out here.
I wish you all the peace that comes with time spent out in nature. It is renewing.

I haven't gotten bullheads in decades. I always loved them. We used to have bullhead dinners at a local Fire Dept. I'm not sure they still do.
Thanks for the great fish photographs.
