Taylor popper no match for .44 mag!

Post by PJM » Mon Sep 28, 2020 11:04 am

All welds broke and popper flew off! See attached. Will reweld at local shop with preheat most likely.

Looks like a bad weld job with little to no penetration. How thick is the popper plate and is it AR500?

I'm certainly with forty on this one. Weak weld joints, too shallow, maybe even wrong rod. Not enough heat. Us old welders see this from time to time. Easy fix.

240 grain speer deep curl softpoints I use for hunting. Range was about 55 yds. Opposite side is impact area with too many marks to figure out where it hit. See attached. Plate is 3/8 thick and I believe it is ar500 as
are most steel targets. No big deal and easy fix.

info appreciated .... I know from long experience that at 55 yards a 240 gr hunting level bullet delivers a major league wallop .... any idea how many hits the popper took before coming apart :?:

Not sure how many. New this year. Rated for .44 mag at min of 25 yards. Rated for all soft point rifle ammo under 3200 fps at 100yds. We may have been too close
. Seems unlikely it could handle a 30-06 at 100yds and not a 44 mag at 55yds.

Rifletom and Forty have the answer. You can see that was some poor welding with no penetration. A good shop should fix you right up.

That stinks I think. They charge good money for those and if they say it will handle 44 mag it should. Id be tempted to take it back and exchange it if it was me.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Some 6010 or 6011 will anchor that target. A little pass of 7018, no more separation.
