Another day with my son.....

Post by zara_puppy » Sun Jul 12, 2020 12:46 am

We headed out early to try to get the range to ourselves again. When we arrived the club was preparing for a shoot. So off we went to the golf course. 9 holes - I got him by three strokes. We decided not to turn the corner and play a second nine as it started getting warm and by then the course was crowded. So back to the house we went. A round of Wii golf later and he got me by three strokes. Still too early to get on the range, so he proceeded to make me look really bad in some Mario Cart. And I mean really bad. A sammich and an easy chair nap later and we head back out to the range. When we got there everyone was gone. Today we’re shooting at 200 yards.

The .270 with standard old Winchester Power Point 150 grain. For reference the target circles are 3” inside and 4 1/2” outside. After the first three he noted he didn’t take any shots to foul the bore and warm the barrel. So I let him take two more. I try to be nice. The Number 1 really shoots well - even with the cheapest of ammo. With quality stuff it’s under 2” regularly. Next up - the Henry:

After three cheap Federal rounds to warm and foul the barrel, three rounds of Federal Berger Hybrid 95 grains to 1 3/4”. I’ll take that. Then the young’un said he could put 5 rounds from his AR in less space than the three from the Henry:

He was right. But not by much!

For fun, I thought I’d try the Redhawk at 100 yards. Maybe i’ve viewed too many posts from North Country Gal and Ranch Roper? 😉

There are four holes in the pic. The other two were, ummm, not near. AND - although the revolver was not rested, the shooters arms were. All respect to those of you that can put holes all over the target from a knee, or cover the target off hand from 50 yards. Maybe one day....

The .44 rounds were 240 grain Hornady XTP over 19.6 grains of 2400. Heavy crimp.

Sorry for the long post but it was a good day, and we declared the day a tie - that way we have to determine the winner at a later date. We want to thank the girls - the wife and the wife to be - for clearing our calendars so we could go play.

Sounds like a fine day. I like the ‘gear’ selection. The 270 especially. The variety of competitions is easy to imagine. I too would fail at the video games.

You will find people will read long posts about shooting. Especially if they have pictures which helps us understand the shooting.
