Range Report: .17HMR CZ 455 FS

Post by Sir Henry » Wed Jul 08, 2020 4:36 pm

I got to the range just after 10 am and there was only three other shooters. When I put my target out two of them pulled theirs so for the next two hours there was just two of us. Made it nice because we both wanted frequent cease fires so we could check our targets.

Here is my setup for shooting with my target at 25 yards. I shot kneeling at 25, 50 and 100 yards. When I shot at 100 yards I used a post to steady the rifle but was still kneeling.

This is the first time I have shot this rifle that I can remember. Nice group except for the last shot. Please note the tangent sight is set for 25 yards. This is a 50 yard target so it makes my group seem smaller than it really is.

Next I shot at 50 yards. I adjusted the elevation for 50 yards. I use a six o’clock sight picture.

Then came 100 yards and I changed the sight picture to target center. Guess I shouldn’t have. This is a 100 yard target and the bullseye appears the same as the 50 yard target at 50 yards.

When I pulled my target there was five others that just arrived to put their targets out. Nice timing on my part.

I wasn’t expecting much so I didn’t have any great expectations however I think my shooting was okay.

Glad you got out for some gunpowder aroma therapy.
I see you got the coffee sponsor product in place. :D
But you really should check the focus
Love your range reports and that is a mighty pretty rifle.

I think your shooting was more than okay, considering the sights and the shooting position, though, for sure, CZ tangent sights are my favorite open sights. Yeah, iron sights on a black bullseye using a six o'clock hold go together like peanut butter and jelly. Beautiful CZ, too. Love the full stock. What I liked best of all, though, is seeing you get out and posting another range report. Just like old times.

I’ve never cared for the sights but understand their history especially with CZ’s and Mausers. I’ve come to the conclusion I just have not shot them enough. I could sure use a good lesson on sight picture. My biggest problem is I don’t know what is correct and keep changing it. That is one of the reasons I used 5 instead of 10 round groups.

Looks like good shooting to me for iron sights Gene. I like those CZ full stocks. I wish I would have jumped on one before they all disappeared. Had a chance to buy a 22 from Bandits buddie passed the first time and them when I went back I guess he didnt want to sell it.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

BigAl, My friend passed away unexpectedly about two months ago. All his guns(and there is many) will be coming up, if not already there, on GunsAmerica or GunsInternational. Not sure which one. There is some great rifles and handguns for buyers to choose from with a lot of hard to find fire arms. Some of his rifles have beautiful wood on them.

I don't know about others, but as I got older, and the eyes are going, optics, or peeps became my friends. ;) But, my open sight match guns I have always found if I'm far enough away I can't see the scoring rings or a clear point of reference for a center mass hold, I get MUCH better groups holding at 6 o'clock.

By floating the bull on top of the front sight post... You insure you are aiming at the same spot each time. Trying to hold center mass from 25 and 50 with iron sights gives my old eyes too much wobble room.

Back in my high power rifle days, when my eyes were good, I adjusted my sights so my point of aim on the human silhouette at five and six hundred yards was the forehead. At that distance, the front sight post on the M14 and M16s was the same width as the "head" would appear. Tuck the tip of the post up to the forehead, Viola! :)

With my dope set for that range, my shots struck the X-ring, with an occasional ten... All about consistent aiming point. (Well, and those other things, sight alignment, sight picture, trigger control, breathing, wind, spin of the earth, gravity... ). :P

Oh, thanks for sharing your shooting. I'm hoping I will be able to do some shooting soon. In between the settling in, I have been scouting for a location for the range. Hopefully, I can settle on one in the very near future and get started.

Nice shooting with that high powered little B Sir Henry! I have a friend that owns a .17 bolt action rifle and it is a flat shooter.
