Range Report .327 Fed

Post by Hatchdog » Fri Mar 20, 2020 9:13 am

A short backstory.. I purchased my Henry 327 from a LGS and it was represented as used but possibly unfired. All outward appearances indicated this to be the case. After getting my scope mounted I finally got out to the range yesterday to sight it in.

I set up at 50 yards and used Federal American Eagle 100 gr JSP. I have previously shot this load in my Ruger LCRX and it was downright painful in that little revolver.

Loaded two in the mag and worked the lever. JAM Cleared the action and the second levered in fine. Unloaded and again put two in the mag, levered and JAM. Did it again and the ctg. Chambered fine. Fired the shot and worked the lever, chambered fine. Okay then....

Continued to shoot the rifle two shots at a time adjusting the scope. Had a few jams but mostly chambered fine. The more I shot the rifle the less problems I had until after a dozen shots or so no more jams whatsoever. Got my scope set and then decided to put 10 in the mag and shoot thru them. 100% reliably both with chambering and ignition. I had no light strikes like Shakey Jake had with his rifle. I did not try any other loads.

The Leupold Rimfire scope I put on it was amazingly bright and clear. I had been shooting an AR with a cheap Vortex (20mm) just prior and the brightness difference was huge.

The first target was shot while adjusting my scope with the three shots in the bullseye the last three I fired. The second is the 10 shot full magazine series I shot and the group opened up some. I will admit I was more focused on the rifles functionality than absolute accuracy with this group and I’m sure the rifle is capable of better accuracy than that group shows. Not terrible however. All shots at 50 yards bagged on a bench.

I’m pretty certain the few jamming issues I had in the beginning was due to the rifle being unfired as suspected as the problem went away quickly with a little firing.

Looks like after a short break in it came to life for you and a great job wearing out the bulls eye of that target!!!
Are all those posts yardage markers on the range?

Great report. Those 100 gr Federals are stout.
They are at the upper end of my comfort level in my SP101 4.2”....

I am a member of that range, the Spokane Rifle Club ... that is the 100 yard rifle section; the poles support “uh oh” barricades to protect a residential area directly downrange. The range is over 100 years old and predates any houses. Range discipline is extremely tight. No messing around of any kind is tolerated.

From my house I hear shots but I am not in the bullet path.....

We can move the target stands from 100 yards to 50 which is helpful when sighting in a manually bore sighted rifle. As John mentioned the posts support the baffles which will capture an errant shot. They also make for nice shooting alleys with two benches per lane. An interesting side note, when I was shooting at 50 yesterday I had targets located one above another on the stand. Another shooter advised me to not shoot at my lower targets as the shot path would strike the ground behind the target not the berm. As the ground is still frozen a ricochet could occur causing my bullet to leave the containment area. I was very appreciative of his advice.

Plus two on those AE 100 grain loads being stout in a small revolver. I got a snub nose Ruger SP101 when the 327 first came out, hoping it would be milder to shoot than a 357 in the same revolver. Maybe it was on paper, but I couldn't tell much difference.

That is some fine shooting. Love those groups.

I didn't either for the first two years I've owned the rifle. Hopefully, as time goes on, yours won't develop that symptom.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......
