I think the Ruger American is a great gun for the money. I should have said it was a Ruger American All Weather. I got it from Buds and think it was just a tad under $400 at the time. A good shooter for that price.

Jake,

Nice to see a .223 bolt gun. With so many AR’s and Mini-14’s out there (yes I happily own a few) we forget about .223 bolt guns. I have an early Savage 110 long action .223 Competition Series that I use for mid-range F Class shooting. I traded a guy an AR for this bolt gun and it shoots fantastic. With the 26” bull barrel and the heavy laminated stock it’s almost like shooting a 22 lr. I use the Forester Bench Rest dies and shoot the Sierra 77 gr SMK over Varget with CCI Bench Rest primers. Here’s a pic of my rifle and the load development target I used. I tried several other bullets including the new plastic tipped match bullets and the old school Sierra Matchking did the best. My final load is the lower left target marked 3. That’s a five shot one hole group. Big scope tho, using 24x at 100 yards.

Thats’ some nice shooting you did, always a real test to shoot a 20 shot group. I used to have a Ruger American in 22wmr and it was a great shooter. Great groups and it really turned ground squirrels inside out.

Nice shooting Dog.

I sure like a Savage bolt gun that I had, my best shot with that rifle was a coyote in the neighborhood of 250 yds.
Should have kept it.

I have liked Savage bolt guns for a long time. Had one in a model 112 in 223 that was a shooter for sure. Should have kept it. I now hav a Savage Bear claw in 338 Win Mag. Its also a shooter. Savage Bolt guns are often over looked when people are considering a bolt gun. Great shooting. Gotta love those Sierra 22 cal bullets. Have always had good luck with them. Especially the 52 gr and 53 gr

Al I also like the Sierra bullets. I loaded for mine, but
what I found odd was it shot remarkably well with some "Cheap" Tula 62 gr HP's.
Shot a young doe with it around 80 yds, it went maybe 5 yds. and collapsed.
I should've kept that one. :(

Ed, over the weekend I saw an add for one
Oh, not interested in a new one, just a crap shoot on a unreasonably low offer on one in a pawn shop for the fun of it. If they take it great - if not, no loss.

Second 20.
I don't want to be in front of you if your rifle is pointed at Me. Nice grouping.

I'm still working on the clean up after my son and I shot the heck out of my range yesterday with a bunch of hand loaded .223 rds. He also shot 100 rds of the steel stuff.
I always miss a few cases, so I scrounge around a bit before calling it quits. That steel stuff might trick me if I see it in the leaves. Hope I got all that crap picked up.
I think I found a couple of once fired brass that I shot a couple of years ago. Yes I do re load that after a spin in the tumbler. It's ugly, but kind of what I call camo brass. Still works.
