Had these 8 inch plates on another setup I had not used in a good while so made up bolt on feet for use as
knock over targets. 3/8ths AR 500 steel.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Don't think my house would be the back stop though.

Re: Range target project....
I made some custom eight inch plates for my range years ago. I came up with the design when I was shooting a lot of GSSF matches, so I could practice for Glock's falling plates stages without having to reset plates.
I used the 8" steel plates with pockets on the back for rebar to slip into, two rods per plate.
Drive the Rebar vertically on the range leaning about 10 to 15 degrees off vertical TOWARD the shooter. When the bullets hit they are angled down... Any splashback falls harmlessly in front of the plates rather than ricocheting back at the shooters 15 yards away. Not usually an issue anyway, but it can be with some loads.... care should be taken. Angling the plates down reduces the risk.
The plates ring and shake, but stay facing the shooter and don't fall.
Used for teaching classes, they can be painted different colors for reaction drills and the instructor calls out the colors to be shot, the student shoots only those colors during the timed drill.
Sometimes an evil instructor calls out a non existent color to see if the shooter fires anyway....

Re: Range target project....
The plates pull right off the rods for storage and the rods stay on the berm. Other rods spaced around the berm let you space the plates in pairs or singly for a more challenging array of choices. Keep the plates painted, don't let morons on the range with high powered rifles shoot at the plates and they last years. THESE are twenty years old and still look great.

Of course not...always use the neighbors house! No...that's just where I placed them to let the sun dry the paint.
They will be heading to the range next trip.

Re: Range target project....
Great idea BrokenMarine! I had those plates on a resetting target system I had built some years ago but I have a swinging plate setup now and easier to
set up. I would pull a cable and the plates would pop back up.
My favorite steel targets are the gongs, silly wet knock overs and the dueling tree.

This was a function test at home....no shooting.

Re: Range target project....
Well they say 100 yds. if using 5.56 or larger when using AR500. AR550 60 yds or more maybe.
I have had a hot .44 Mag FMJ put a very slight dimple in my AR500 plates at 20 yds.
