Long Ranger H014S-308 Range Report

Post by C Haden » Mon Oct 28, 2019 3:03 pm

Well, I am fairly pleased. After some scope mounting shenanigans, I finally got a chance to get out and send a few down range today.

100 yards, (12 sighters; nine at 50, and three more at 100) with about 5 mph of right to left crosswind, this is the first and only group I shot after being satisfied with the sight in. While not stellar results, consider that I'm shooting a Leupold 4x Dangerous Game scope, with heavy, European style crosshairs that almost completely obscure the 3" diameter bullseye at 100 yards. Shooting PPU .308 Match, 168gr HPBT's. Temp was about 61° and cloudy.

The only problem I had was that the locking lugs took a pretty hefty slam from the lever to fully engage. Seemed to get a little better as I shot, so probably just some break-in needed.

Not sure why the formatting is a little messed up. Tried fixing it, but no joy. Posting from phone, but still showing part of the text starting adjacent to the inline photo, on my computer as well.

It is frustratiing, I know. I just added a couple of carriage returns to your post to adjust the text. ;)

Good to see you got out to shoot! Had a problem similar with mine. But when it happened to me the action would seize up with the bolt carrier sticking out of the receiver about 1/8". At that point I could not fully close the lever or retract it. Had to place both thumbs on the back of the bolt carrier and force it in. And I mean really lean on it to force it in. Something inside would release and I could then open the lever. Did not happen with every round. Initially it didn't happen with some non-firing practice rounds I made for debug, but once the dummy primer was dented enough it would seize up every single time. What the heck I thought. Made up more dummy rounds and it was 100% repeatable. Never did figure out why dummy dented primers made a difference. After that sent it to Henry Warranty, the repair ticket stated 'adjusted bolt lockup timing'. I'm guessing at this, but it seems if the firing pin was forward just enough (like into the dent of a used/dummy primer) the bolt wouldn't rotate into full lockup and wedge in place. Since getting it back from Henry, no problems. Even the dented primer dummy rounds cycle just fine.

Only issue I have now. If I don't keep the receiver upright and/or operate the lever briskly, I get a nose up ammo jam in the receiver. Otherwise I'm fully satisfied in the rifle, the way it shoots and Henry's warranty service.

That's exactly what was happening with mine, except, with a little elbow grease, I was able to retract the lever and then slam it home again. Like I said, it seemed to get better as I shot, but I only fired about 16 rounds today. I suspect the timing on mine might be off just a hair, but I'll shoot it a little more and see what happens.

I was afraid I was going to break something reefing on the lever. Felt like I was real close to at least bending it. Get back out there and shoot some more and have fun doing it.

You might try some different factory ammo as some of that foreign made stuff can be different.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

In my case, made no difference.
