good day at the range

Post by bandit1250 » Wed Aug 28, 2019 6:52 pm

Went to the range today to shoot the KYL spinner targets. I took my CZ Grand Finale and the Win. Model 52 Sporter. Checked the zero on each rifle before shooting the spinners. CCI standards for both guns. Need to be right on to hit the last spinner that is 1/4" dia. My friend had his 1416 Anschutz HB. We shot for about two hours only stopped to walk out and paint the spinners a few times to see them better. After we were done shooting spinners we set up a target again to finish off some almost shot up boxes of ammo. I shot a 5 shot group with the CZ and 5 with the Win. 52. This was with ammo I wasn't using on the spinners so it was a little low on the target with the lower velocity than the CCI standards I was using. My friend only had three left in his box and shot them in the Anschutz. We shot SK+ at the paper targets. He was very impressed with the Grand Finale on the range trip and said he may have to dig his left hand 452 American out and shoot it some. The Win. 52 is far better than what it started out at back weeks ago. I like it enough to shoot it and maybe squirrel hunt with it later in Sept. if I hunt Md. this year. It is fairly heavy compared to the lighter CZ 452's.
Everyone have a safe and fun holiday week end.

Any upgrades would be a more powerful scope on The Grand Finale. I have a fixed 6X Burris HBR target scope on it now and it works so well I hate to change it. It is also a gloss finished scope and matches the very deep bluing on the rifle. I may set a fixed 12 X Leupold on it for a while. The 1/4" spinner looks small in the 6X. I did put a 3-9X33 EFR Leupold Freedom scope on the Mod. 52 as it only had a 4X on it for a while. I have tuned the triggers and action screw torque to the sweet spot on both rifles. Funny how much just 2 inch lbs. will change the accuracy on a rifle. The CZ I have added shims in the barrel channel at different spots until I found what thickness and spot in the channel worked the best. That CZ is one fine shooting rifle and I love it. It would be the last one to leave and some have been leaving here lately.

My friend that was shooting with me today was shooting his Anschutz with his scope on 32 power. His bench rest custom built 22 has a fixed 40 power Leupold on it. Makes the target look like it is glued to the muzzle when you look at the target with that 40 power Leupold. I can't use anything over about 18 power. My 10/22 I shot yesterday has a 4-12 Leupold AO on it and he asked me what power my scope was and I said it goes to 12X but I have it on 10X. He questioned me then on why not turn it up all the way. I really thought I was seeing just fine on 10X so I just left it there.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Yes we were shooting from decent benches that I would have made some changes to but at least they are steady. Today was the first time I have used a Caldwell front rest and a home made rear bag set up. I feel it was alright but I am used to regular old home made sand bags front and rear and it is hard to change. May try the Caldwell some more. My wife likes the Caldwell when she shoots and usually can shoot right with the men or quite often better them at the range. She loves shooting her CZ 452's but also has a great shooting 10/22 Target model. If you ever get a chance to shoot the KYL spinner target give it a try. A whole lot of fun!

I was curious because your friend was commenting in the 40 power usage. I cant imagine shooting with that kind of power and not being benched or in a sled. I dont use a bench much myself as its just not the way I like to shoot. Nothing against it I just like to shoot off hand and Im more of a plinker than a paper shooter.

.
For me the image at max power is too wobbly. So I dial it back too.
