May 26th, back to the Wild West

Post by RanchRoper » Sun May 26, 2019 3:52 pm

45 Colt Range Time! As you know I like to cowboy up my range reports so here goes another....

Inspired by North Country Gal's revolver work this past week, I gave my Colt 1871 SA Richards cartridge conversion a workout. For those who don't know the story behind this revolver, in 1871 Colt employee Charles Richards was awarded a patent for converting Colt 1860 percussion models to breech loading cartridge revolvers. He took the inventory of percussion parts and made this gun. Later as the parts ran short, William Mason redesigned the revolver to the Richards-Mason 1860 Army Conversion. Later became the 1871 Colt Open Top revolver. The army wanted a stronger frame so Colt made the 1873 Model P which is the most common Colt cowboy revolver we all know. The conversions remained popular with cowboys as they were $6.00 and the Peacemaker was $15.00. Big bucks in 1873...

So, on to the report: shooting my own reloads, 6.6 gn of Universal, 200 gr LRNFP...I am quite pleased with how the reloading is going. These shoot really well. I don't know if it's me or the ammo, but I was pretty happy with the results today.

Cool, like that conversion revolver.

Oh yeah, I’m kind of a fan of the Henry Rifle as well.

RR, I am well and truly impressed with that shooting with the Colt. I honestly don't think it is humanly possible to shoot any better with those sights and I know what it takes to get those kinds of groups. Wall hangers, all. Congrats.

Thanks folks, much appreciated. It is such a nice revolver to shoot and I believe that long sight distance between front and rear (10" approx) helps quite a bit with accuracy.

RR --- I think your comment on the longer sight radius has headed me toward a better understanding of why my Schofield 1874 Russian .45LC revolver is so easy to aim and shoot. My barrel length is 6.5", and the distance I aim through is 7-1/4". That's the longest sight radius I've had on any of my revolvers. If the rear sight were mounted on the hammer as yours is and not on the top break frame, I'd have about a 9-1/2" sight radius.

Cool revolver history you shared, and appreciate the insight on the sight. I've not forgotten --- great target POIs!

I am diligently working on my revolver grip and patience as I wait to be surprised as I gently squeeze off a shot. It is very easy for me to fall back into bad habits and pull that trigger anticipating the bang and the recoil. When I do, most are on paper but it's all over the place. Today was a good one.

The other thing I find is that my revolver shoots true & deadly accurate provided I do my part.

Really enjoyed that. The cowboy pictures made it special. Put in extra blank lines between things so text and pictures get lined up, not mixed up.
