April 28th, Buffalo Bill's Wild West!

Post by RanchRoper » Sun Apr 28, 2019 5:54 pm

The Wild West Show comes to town... (isn't that NCG in the bottom left, nerves of steel shooting while a buffalo jumps over her head???)

Actually every time I go to the range it's a contest, with myself just trying to get better. Today I had the place to myself again, 28F with a nice breeze.
First up is this classic revolver, the 1871 Colt Richards cartridge conversion. 45 Colt, 8" barrel and a V notch sight in the hammer. This might be my best pistol target to date. Maybe it's the ammo. I shot my reloaded 250gr bullets. 6.7gn of Universal with Winchester primers. Flawless execution of every round. Love it.
This is 15 yds, one hand. 15 rounds.

Next up are the targets that always freak me out. 4 on 1 sheet (had to split the sheet for the antique pics). I was very determined today to best these targets. I was pleased with the result.
50 yds, one knee position. My 1860 Henry in 45 Colt. Same ammo as above. 12 rounds.

Next challenge, 100 yds with rifle from 1 knee position. Very happy with this one. Ladder sight up but no adjustment on the notch. 12 rounds.

...and last but not least....just for the heck of it....200 yds from 1 knee...12 rounds spent but only 5 on the paper, some of which did not make in the antique photo process but they are there (barely on the paper)...
But at least I tried...haha...I sure showed the plywood board who's boss...

OUTSTANDING .... I know I keep saying that in response to your targets but its dead on right .... truly OUTSTANDING .... I know you are experimenting with other loads, they will have to go a long way to improve on what you fired today

Loved the show, RR. Yes, that is me under that flying buffalo. Bad place to be if the buffalo is suffering from indigestion, by the way.

RR, we just happened to watch Quigley, the other night and you remind me of him in a way, what with your main shooter being a rifle, but still being able to use that six-gun so well. Very impressive one-hand shooting with the Remington. I keep reminding myself to give that kneeling position a try on the next range trip. Maybe this next time. I think kneeling is a very under-rated classic shooting position.

Thanks folks for the kind words. I do find that shooting from 1-knee position is very comfortable for me. It would be my preference every time. I do try to shoot standing off hand as much as possible but it is never very comfortable for me. Hickock45 just cranks those rounds off standing all the time and makes it look easy but it is not easy for me.

I think I will stay pretty close to this load for the 250 gr bullets. It works for me.

This little range report was a prelude to one coming soon hopefully with my 1885 single shot buffalo gun....stay tuned.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Hey All,

That is good shooting and looking at that pistol target maybe I should rethink not having an rpal. I know my son wants to get one maybe do the additional training with him.
