I see both at matches.
I tend to hold the rifle softly - I guess you'd call that "free recoil".
I shoot a lot of .22 Std Vel ammo and practice follow through, as important as sighting in properly.
With my 30-30 I try to hold the rifle on-target until I see the bullet impact - doesn't work too well with 170gr Ram loads, but everything else is OK.
