300 Win Mag vs 45/70

Post by JEBar » Sat Oct 13, 2018 10:11 am

when it comes to big game hunting I have several very capable options to pick from .... most are 30 caliber, specifically 308, 30-06, 300 WBY .... all have taken bear, boar, and deer .... my choice of which of them to take hunting historically depends on range, weather, and game hunted ... now days, my 2 favorite big game hunting rifles are a Remington 700 BDL 300 WBY Mag and a Henry 45-70 .... basically, at 150 or less yards, I'd take the 45-70 .... the exception would be if I was hunting smaller bodied big game, I'd probably fall back to the 308 .... at over 150 yards, I'd take the 300 .... the video at this link ===> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smsfhJ8eCg4 didn't reveal anything unexpected ..... I did find it to be very interesting

nice video Jeb, Tahnks.
One of the reasons I like my 444's.
Out to 150 yds. the big bores have a lot more kinetic energy than the speedsters like the 06, and the 300.
Past that then the 20 cal.'s take over.
I read a while back that the T-4 has more energy at a 150 yds. than the 44 mag @ the muzzle.

Only speedster I own is a coupe 30-06's, but
I haven't hunted with either in years.Maybe the 308 MX is a little speedy.

my 308 is an early Belgium made BLR .... it is an extremely accurate rifle .... it was my first "reach out and touch something" rifle .... when I joined a deer hunting club located "down east" in NC and was literally hunting from Texas type tower stands over farm fields that were over a square mile in size, I figured I needed something that could reach out a bit further .... a 300 WBY Mag filled that need .... our 30-60 is a stainless Remington 700 with synthetic stock .... I used it when hunting in rainy conditions .... it did well, it has the least use of any of our hunting rifles .... in recent years my hunting has been under circumstances where 150 yards was a long shot .... for most of those hunts I used the BLR .... having a Henry 44 Mag and 45-70 has opened new doors for us
