October 7th, 1860

To celebrate National Rifle Range Day, I thought I'd challenge myself today and take only 25 rounds for a 100 yard shoot. Well it was a challenge to say the least. Not my best effort, but here it is. No wind today, temperature about 35F. Lots of snow glare but that's not an excuse, this target is all me. Maybe they moved the 100 yard board out on me...

My 1860 Henry 45 Colt shooting 250 gr LFN Sellier & Bellot ammo. Open sights with a little set of binoculars to see what's what way out there...8" target. Shooting from the 1 knee position.
23 out of 25 rounds on 8" circle. Still pulling to the left but again it is me not the rifle. Working on that.

And of course my rifle...the "Adios Muchachos" view :) (Mr. Bad Guy if you are 100 yards away please move a little to the left.)

Not me, I am moving to the right, way, way to the right. :) Honestly, don't know too many shooters who can math that with open sights from a kneeling position. As always, very impressive.

And happy National Rifle Range Day! Didn't know there was such a thing, but glad to see you celebrating it.

A fitting tribute to National Rifle Day, RR. Though you may not recognize it, that's some great shooting. Thanks for the report.

Vaquero said it was so that's good enough for me to go shoot.
That little 8" dot is a long way off for sure.
There was a guy shooting clay pigeons with a Mossberg 12 gauge. Tried a few shots and I was 4 for 4 so I quit while ahead. First time I ever fired a shotgun....quite fun. It is very different tracking it in the air.

Not a biggie with the left side POIs, RR. Your target looks great. Remember, it is only 8 inches, and you're shooting off hand.

Do you remember the late winter/early spring chats we had about your challenge to yourself using your 1860 factory sights?
Ranch Roper wrote:So far, I really like the challenge of the 1860 factory sights. My rifle is pretty accurate with the ladder down out to 50 yards, and it's fun to play with the ladder out to 100+ yds. I shoot lots of 8" splash targets which I can spot up to 50 yds, but I need to get some larger paper splash ones for the longer shots. Or a set of binoculars. My plan this summer is to get on some sort of a target at 200 yds from a one-knee position. Old time cowboy shot. We'll see....three times in a row in less than a minute from 100 yards.”
I had copied your comment above into a new thread I wrote, where I also posted my 2014 story from ShotGun Forums on my challenging Hickok45 in shooting long-distance 1-oz. slugs with a Benelli 12-ga pump shotgun. Self-challenges are a lot of fun.

All this to say was that I was looking for the "gold standard" of off-hand shooting I had written about, and found it in this thread. Sending it your way as a reminder. I'm certain you have the skill with your 1860 to do this:
PT7 wrote:Recently read an article in Outdoor Life magazine titled “Shooting Off-Hand,” and the writer was Jim Carmichel. First time I’ve read of an achievement level or standard for testing oneself when shooting off-hand:

“The gold standard of unsupported, off-hand shooting with a hunting rifle is hitting a target the size of a dinner plate (roughly comparable to a whitetail's vitals) three times in a row in less than a minute from 100 yards.”
Bet you can! Sure would like to see 3 big holes at 100 yards....even if a little to the left side!

You're on. Might go shoot tomorrow. 3 rounds at 100 yds in less than 1 minute on my wife's best china plate...or maybe an 8" target. Oh the pressure! :)

I have to stand though for true off hand shooting. We'll see....

Yeah, looking forward to seeing those three big holes, RR. :)
If you do use your "wife's best china plate," I'd say you really like a challenge!

Have a lot of fun!

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Next weekend will be the plate shoot; got busy around home today and didn't get to the range. Snow on the way, temperature been dropping all day. 31F right now.
