Contrasting Lever Action Rifles: .30-30 vs .44 Magnum

Post by JEBar » Sun Sep 30, 2018 7:48 pm

this is a link === > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNiDwprzoo4 to a rather well done, side-by-side comparison of bullet performance of 30-30 and 44 Mag in lever action rifles by Paul Harrell .... I did learn a few things but for me the video helped to confirm some beliefs I have in both calibers

Two thumbs up from me. Very well done, factual and even handed.

Enjoyed the vid. Thanks for the link.

One thing he missed that I think is important is the fpe at 100 yards between the 30-30 150 and the 240 in the 44 mag out of a rifle. After all, no one is shooting deer at the muzzle. I was surprised to learn, then, that there is actually not a lot of difference at 100 yards in the energy of the two cartridges out of a rifle. After 100 yards, though, the 44 mag really starts to bleed of velocity. The lever evolution 30-30 loads, especially, carry much better past 100 yards. This comparable fpe out to 100 yards for the 44 explains the very comparable results in his penetration tests. As always, velocity and energy comparisons at the muzzle can be very misleading.

I love the Paul Harrell comparison videos. When it comes to A vs B, there are probably no better. I watched one recently about the 9mm vs 10mm and it left me convinced that the 10 could do everything the 9 could do, but with more power. He has tons of videos, most of which compare various guns and ammo based on subscriber's requests, I guess..............

Can't even remember how or when I stumbled across Paul Harrell, but I'm glad I did. He's a bit quirky (aren't we all?), but he's very thorough and scientific in his approach.
And, you have to love the "meat test," complete with oranges!
Couldn't be more different from Hickok45, but easily just as useful (if not more so).
And so deadpan serious.
