I ran across a couple of Ruger .357 Carbine Bolt action rifles on GunBreaker. But the .44 carbine is quite appealing - that is the sort of "project" I'd like to work with.

Those UTG Leapers are nice scopes and represent a good choice for that $80 to $150 category. They are springer rated so that tells you they're tough and the optics are a notch above the Simmons. The AO is a nice touch, and the compact design fits the looks of the carbine, as it would a Henry.

There is a “hint of tactical” to it, which I’m not sure about for my application, but the size and user reviews won me over. I haven’t shot the Carbine since I scoped it, but I have high hopes. With the QD rings, I can pop it off and still see the buckhorn through the V in the weaver rail.

Redthies - thanks for sharing you Ruger 44.
That really look good - much better then the original.
I'll look into that stock maker - going to redo a Marlin 60 this winter (unless I find a Ruger for $170!)
Thanks for sharing.

Had a surprise this week. My sister-in-law want to give me a couple of guns she got from her Ex. One is a mistreated Marlin 60 and the other is a small .45 ACP that she doesn't know who made (Star, Astra?).
The Marlin needs a refinish and clean up job for sure. The pistol - who knows. She divorced 25 years ago and took the guns "just because". The Marlin was in the closet and the handgun might have been in the sock drawer - I know she never shot them and the ex never cleaned them.
Looks like I have a winter project (He had a Ruger 44 carbine - why didn't she take that one?)

.
The ex probably thought he was being smart in sacrificing the two to keep the Ruger.

I wish Ruger would make those 44 semi-autos again. I would be all over one of them.

You might want to look at something in 45 Colt. That's a round that is pretty easy on the shoulder but it is hard on the budget if you don't reload.

I had a Rossi 92 in .45 Colt. It was a fun gun to shoot - but it wanted .454 bullets. Standard .45 auto bullets didn't shoot well. But a 250gr bullet moving just under "leading speed" will do anything you need, and not punish the shooter. Shoulda kept it.

I agree about the Ruger .44 mag. If they had made them with removable magazines they would still be in production.
