PT7 -- SGC back to the Range
PT7 -- SGC back to the Range
At times, not very often, I head to the shooting range without a plan or goal. Just go to loose some bullets at a target. I looked at my shooting log for my SGC and was suprised I hadn't shot this fun gun for almost three months. Wow! I guess the excitement of getting my first Uberti .45LC revolver took over my attention at the range!
So packed up my SGC, 100 rounds of Rem 40gr Golden Bullet HV, 40gr PLRN, and a couple of different-sized apertures. One thing I decided to do was not use my Spee-D-Loader and I slot-loaded the bullets into the magazine one-at-a-time. That was relaxing!
The Frontier Justice indoor range is max 25 yards. I shot off hand, standing, at 15, 20, 25-yard distances. All my POIs were pretty decent and I was not having the usual eye strain I've experienced at times. I think that may be because I changed out my apertures a couple of times, and settled on the standard, larger .096 size, and put away the .070 aperture. Found this to be a good choice. Often my elder eyes start heading south (eye strain/fatigue) at around 65 or so shots. Never even felt this yesterday, and kept on going. POIs continued to land where I wanted to go with them.
Last 10 rounds (90-100), I shot at a 1" orange bull on a 10" square piece of cardboard. Whenever I change apertures and work with the Skinner peep sight, I like to check the accuracy of my sights just in case I've loosened that peep at all. Plus "dialing in" a Skinner ghost ring peep is not the tightest sighting system out there. I have worked that peep sight before and unintentionally loosened and turned it.
Brought my target in to a short 10 yards and gazed at the 1" bull. With ease and comfort, I shot about my best ever short-distance, 10-round group with my SGC. Placed 10 POIs with largest gap from dead on bull at 1-1/2" (marked on target photo). Finished with 5/10 in the 1" orange -- yes, there are five there, with two rounds "doubled up" at right side. The SGC peep held tight, the Henry rifle is as accurate as ever, and my elder eyes worked!
The "no-plan" range visit was much fun, and had a good ending to it. Already ready for next time out!

Re: PT7 -- SGC back to the Range
Those just have fun range trip are the best, I agree. Having a lot of guns like we do, though, means that I always have projects lined up for every range trip. Sometimes I find myself in a rush to get them all done before my eyes fatigue. Then when I do get a gun where I want it shooting, I put it away and on to the next gun, promising myself I'll get back to one of these guns and just shoot it for fun, later on. Sometimes just don't happen and then I wonder where the fun went. Thanks for the reminder. Much needed.
You did a nice job, PT. Every time you shoot the SGC, you know it a little better. Do it often, enough, and it's your friend, just like that 1860 of RR's.

I like seeing the detail that goes into your thinking and the results that come of it.

Lady & Gents, Appreciate the kind comments.
For me, any SGC Range Reports are really a pleasure and easy to write because the SGC is such an excellent Henry Carbine. I've not had my new BBS .357 Carbine as long and have shot it a lot less so far, but hope those reports also become as easy to pen!

Re: PT7 -- SGC back to the Range
I’ve never kept a log on which firearms I’ve shot. Sometimes I would put a tag on a rifle letting me know what it was last sighted for but that is it.
