July 8th, 1860 Henry & 1871 Colt

Post by RanchRoper » Sun Jul 08, 2018 1:42 pm

What a beautiful day in southwest Alberta. Off to the range early this morning for some cowboy fun. My 1860 Henry and 1871 SA Army Colt Richards cartridge conversion revolver. Both in 45 Colt.

2 targets, 100 yds, open sights, on one knee with the rifle & just for the sheer fun of it; 50 yards two handed with the revolver. First time shooting the pistol at this distance, but with no wind I thought why not? Usually shoot pistol at 25 yds max. Wolf 45 Colt ammo, 250 gr lead RNFP. Took 40 rounds with me today, 15 with the pistol and the rest with rifle. A kid next to me put a couple of .22 rifle rounds into my pistol target too ( )...he was all over the place...Anyhow, I had a ton of fun shooting the pistol out that far and was ok with the results. Had to aim a little higher than normal so it was a guessing game. Here are the targets & my old west guns that made them happen....enjoy!

Did enjoy your Range Report, RR...thanks. And always nice to have those beautiful days outdoors!

I kinda focused on your Army Colt since I just got the 1873 Cattleman in .45 LC last week. I shot it max 15 yards, but will look to reaching out farther. Q for you: What is the measurement of your "racetrack" splash target you set at 50 yards? It looks close to being a standard silhouette size?

Glad you were kind enough to share your target with the .22 plinker. At my outdoor MO range, I had kindly neighbors in the next booth that let me do that a couple of times. Actually, one of those strays landed dead-on in his red bull. He smiled when he showed it to me....nice chap. Boy, was I ever off on that shot!

Also enjoyed your cool 8-) gun photos. Never get weary of seeing those.
Have a great day.

Nice work with both 45s, RR. Always good to stretch bit with those single action revolvers. That's a great 50 yard target with the Colt conversion. Just shows that those old guns were no slouches when you needed to reach out bit. Bill Hickok was reputed to be an excellent long range pistolero. You did him proud.

Wow thanks! Roy Rogers sure made it look easy. Never saw him miss in 300 movies or 80+ TV shows.... :)

That big 'ol 1871 is sure fun to shoot though.

I'll bet it is fun to shoot. Beautiful gun. I've been concentrating on double action revolvers. I need to catch up on the single action revolvers. My next SA revolver will be Uberti and I may just go with 45 Colt, despite the ammo cost. 357/38s make more sense, cost-wise and I love shooting them, but I really miss shooting the 45 Colt. Nothing else quite like it.
