Excellent day on the backyard range
Excellent day on the backyard range
Gorgeous day here in rural WNY. Have a nice 100 yd range set up in some of my woods, and had a blast today. Took my .41 and .44, and my father brought a few of his guns (no Henry’s, yet).
This was the first time shooting the .44, just picked it up from the gun shop this morning. Right out of the box, was hitting clays at 100 yds on a pretty consistent basis. Set up some cabbages at 50, and we had cabbage flying all through the woods. No issues, everything worked perfectly, couldn’t be happier with it.
Now, I have to say the highlight of the day was not with a Henry surprisingly. While testing out my fathers new handgun, S&W .460 Vxr, I shot at a clay hanging off of a 6inch wide tree. Not only did I vaporize the clay, I actually blew the tree in half! Now that’s some serious stopping power.
As always, my .41 performed just as excellently, with open sights it will hit anything you point it at.

Reactive targets are the best. Sounds like a good time. Cabbages haven't ever shot those but I have shot a bunch of clay targets.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

With the cabbage flying and landing all through the woods, there just might be some small critters that will have a good supper this evening! Glad you had a good outing....best part of owning firearms, the fun of it.

Oh yes I considered setting a trail cam out there just to see what comes through to clean it all up. Definitely a good time, and i’d Highly recommend cabbages as a cheap, and fun target for your next shoot.

Never liked cabbage, anyway.
Yeah, for those of you who have never shot a 460 Smith ... it's like nothing else. Back when I was still shooting mine, I shot 454s for reduced loads !!!

I expect that 454 even with reduced loads still packs a lot of wallop.

The .460 is an experience for sure. Can’t say I’ve ever shot anything nearly as powerful, especially in a handgun.
