357, 30-30 and 243

Post by Ojaileveraction » Wed Jun 27, 2018 11:18 pm

A little range therapy today.
I took my Henry BBB 357 the 336xlr 30-30 and Finnwolf in 243.
I setup on the west end were I could shoot the 300 meter gongs and the silhouette swingers.
I got there a little late so the wind was starting up. I don't mind shooting in the wind it keeps the bugs away.

I rotated the rifles not letting any one get too hot.

I'm still getting used to the Finnwolf, Lever Action but it shoots like a bolt gun. A really good looking accurate bolt gun.
I brought store ammo to shoot so I can build my supply of brass Shooting 100gr and 80gr Winchester sp off my Rock bench rest the rifle is boringly accurate on the 300 meter 6 inch gong. With the reloads I'm planning on using the 600 yrd range.

Shooting the xlr with it 24 inch barrel and 27 inch sight radius i'm using the same loads I used for Rams in the Silhouette match. Close to a max portion of IMR3031 under Sierra 150gr fp #2000. Also 110gr 30 cal carbine rn over a minimum draft of IMR3031. I have used those two bullets for a few years in
different 30-30 rifles. I can always get them and they have been consistent. Including in the Marlin 336 xlr. Off hand I had full mags of the the 150gr bullets clanging the 36 inch gong.
Setting down and shooting off the Rock BR I had the 110gr Round Nose bullets hitting the 300 meter 10 inch gong.

The Big Boy made the gallery sit up and notice. I bought some Speer 357 180gr fmj bullets. They have to be single loaded according to the paper in the box. I got them to try in my 35 Remington but I wanted to try in the Henry also.
Off Hand shooting those Full Metal Jacket bullets using H110 really rang the big gong. That purdy Brass, Walnut and Steel rifle could shoot real good.

I can't shoot the Speer Full metal Jacket in an NRA Silhouette Match because all ammo must be loaded through the magazine. That would no be practical tube loading.

All in All it was a good day at the range.

Sounds like a fun day. I'd rather shoot metal, but our club only allows shooting paper unless supervised by a club officer in certain competitions. I can understand that from the standpoint of keeping things safe and the range from getting trashed, but it's not as much fun as shooting metal.

Interesting mix of rifles. I've always had excellent accuracy with 24" Marlin 30-30s. Not surprised to hear your Marlin shoots so well.

Great to hear you had a good day at the range....yup, those are "therapy," and plain 'ole fun.

I don't know anything about your 30-30 or Finnwolf, but I really like your comments about when the BBB .357 showed up at your range. That happens to me fairly often, especially when the ROs come around for safety checks. Henrys are built to be noticed!! :D
