My 1st outing with the Henry 45-70 All Weather

Post by Rustbelt » Sun Apr 29, 2018 6:10 pm

Between work, weather, and travel, this was the 1'st weekend that I could make it out to try the 45-70.
I took a box of 405 grain Winchester cowboy action and a box of 405 grain Remington.
Set up at 40 yards and I love this gun.
Smooth and accurate.
Both loads were easy to shoot. For the 1st time shooting a 45-70, I expected the 405 grain Remingtons to kick a little more then they did.
Now that I know I can shred cans at 40 yards, I'll get to the range and see how well I do with longer shots.
I didn't take many pictures because we've all seen shredded beer cans. Property owner has all I want as long as I clean them up. Free is good.

I love my AW 45-70 as well. Do you reload or will you just be shooting factory ammo?

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Another point.
I purchased this gun with the intention of putting high visibility sight on it. After yesterday I found i don't really need to. As long as I can see the target, I can hit it.
Nice to know.

I've been looking into reloading. After yesterday it's looking like I will.
For now I'll be trying different factory loads to see what I like. I've never owned a 45-70 before and I have a bit to learn.
Any advise you might have would be greatly appreciated.
I purchased this gun for whitetail in thick woods.

Congrats on your Henry and the 45-70.

I shoot the factory 405 grain Remingtons in my TC Contender and they're not bad at all as far as recoil, thanks to that 1330 fps velocity. Very accurate in my Contender, too. Have found with the 45-70 that once velocities start edging up around 1600 fps, regardless of bullet weight, things start to hurt.

NCG is spot on about the hurt. I shot some the other day about 20 rounds and they were not in the 1600fps range and next day and for a few days after I had sore shoulder. The Remington loads are some I have a box of but havent tried in mine yet. But one load I do like and its old guy with a aint as good as it once was shoulder friendly is a 350gr plated Berrys bullet and 16 grains of Universal Clays. Shoots good in mine groups real nice and is very pleasant to shoot.
