I think I can hit the side of a barn now

Last Sunday at the range, I had my elevation ramp as low as it could go and still shooting high. My limited knowledge of semi-buckhorn sights lead me to believed that the elevation had reached its minimum. After contacting Henry, the light bulb came on that there was still more adjustment. Even though I read about the diamond insert, I did not understand it to be adjustable also. I thought it was just reversible. Yet, the manual clearly states it is for fine tuning as well and can be raised and lowered. So after following the directions in the manual and from Henry, I was able to align my sights to point of impact close to center. Therefore, my issue was more of operator error or lack of knowledge.

Yes, I could have put a scope on it or tried other open sights. But, I already have a rifle with a scope. Plus, I have a couple of hand guns that have basic open sights. I wanted a nice looking rifle with open sights of the same caliber as my other rifle. Hence, that is why I chose the H009. For now, I am good.

Below is a couple of targets at 25 yards. It was a 4H group on the 50 and 100 yards range. However, I think the 25 yards range give me a good idea what the rifle and I can do. With more practice, I should get better. The first two groups of 3 on the first target were with Federal 170 gr. I adjusted for elevation after the first group and let it stay there. In all, I shot Federal 170 gr, Winchester 150 and 170 gr, Hornady 150 and 160 gr, and Remington 150 gr. I think Winchester 150 gr was a better group with Hornady 150 gr being next.

Lesson learned, skimming while reading can lead to a bad misunderstanding.

Great that you got out to do some shooting. Always nice to make progress on a gun. Seems to be a never ending work in progress on some guns, but that's what keeps us going back to do more shooting. Good for you.

I am of the mindset, one never knows what he or she can do until one tries. So if there is no risk, there is very little to no gain. If nothing else as you pointed out North Country Gal, it nice just shooting a few rounds.

I don't know how many times I've adjusted sights the wrong way. And I know how to do it.

I find shooting with iron sights, after all the years of using a scope, to be almost a lost skill. For me, maintaining a consistent sight picture is the challenge. I can't blame the sights if I don't aim exactly the same each time. I blame the floaters in my eyes, instead .

Yes, I seem to do better with a scope. But, I like to challenge myself at times. It seems like there is always room for improvement.
