January 21st range report

Post by RanchRoper » Sun Jan 21, 2018 3:48 pm

Thermometer on 28F and a 40mph wind howling today. Perfect winter weather on the frontier for some shootin'!

Range piled up with frozen drifts, but road was accessible somewhat in 4x4. My Henry 1860 in 45 Colt. Winchester 250 gr LFN ammo, my favorite. Shot 2 targets today at 50 yds. #1 was not quite as good as #2 where I started to get dialed in. Off hand standing as usual, but the wind was really pounding on me and the barrel even at the edge of the shed. Flat nose 45 colt bullets are not the most aerodynamic either. Tough to steady the rifle. Just cleaned and oiled the rifle last weekend so it was flawless in the execution of 50 rounds of lead downrange. I am getting to know my rifle and it's capabilities, even on windy days it's pretty consistent in performance with the open sights. Took a little time and lots of lead to figure it out though. Hope you enjoy the pics.

Always enjoy your reports, RR, both for the beauty of your shooting and that gorgeous 1860.

Been a long time since I've had to deal with those kinds of winds, now that we live up here in the north woods. Grew up on the prairies of the Dakotas and Nebraska, though, so, oh yeah, no stranger shooting or fishing or any kind of outdoor activity under windy conditions. In fact, when we did get a calm day with no wind, took us awhile to figure out what's wrong. :)

Thank you all. Yes if i wait for a day with no wind out here I'll never shoot. In the first range photo the 50 yard is peeking out from behind the post.

Nice shooting. When I opened the post I only saw the hole at the top of the target and it reminded me of this youtube video.

As always just great shooting. I hope I can do half as good as that with my 1860.
