300 meters with a .44-40 black powder load in an 1873

I figured this might be the best place to post someone else's video range report. Not new, he posted this a few years ago and I just watched it again. I love his videos and fortunately Europeans who love the American and Canadian west have kept guns of the old west alive. He motivates me to try my Big Boy at the 300 yard range. But, my rear sight elevator is already set at the highest notch when I shoot at 200 yards :( Maybe I should buy a 1860 Henry style rear sight? My load I use is a bit lighter bullet and a bit slower than his. He uses a 255 gr cast with 30gr of black powder which he chronographed in another video out of a Pedersoli Lightning with 24" barrel (same length as his 1873) at about 1240fps.

I at one time had an 1873 Uberti and shot black thru it using the RCBS 215 gr bullet that Mike Venturino talked about in Shooting Leverguns of the old west. It was alot of fun playing with the gun shooting black. At the time though the clean up wasnt something I wanted to deal with. That was before I started using the Swiss Black. I sold the gun and so the rest is history. I had a second one with a longer barrel and sold it to. Should have kept the second one. I have returned to the black and I am now shooting more of it again. Black Powder is addictive.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

if you know your bullet's ballistic coefficient and muzzle velocity, there is an old school way to give you a chance at hitting something at 300 yards without having to change to a long range rear sights .... sight your rifle to be dead on at 25 yards .... just as an example, lets say you find that to be dead on at 300 yards your rifle needs to be 4" high at 25 yards .... setup a paper target with no backing at 25 yards .... align the paper target with your 300 yard target .... aim so your bullet passes through the paper target 4" high .... the paper target shouldn't have sufficient impact on the bullet to change its impact point at 300 yards

All the new 44-40 made in the last 25 year have .429 mag barrels . Only the Colt or Bond uses the .427 barrels . NEVER HOT ROD any loads in the 1860 Henry , 1866 or 1873 wins . These are BP actions and don't handle high pressure well . Use 44-40 HV ammo in 92 Winc or Ruger Vaquero only .
