I took two of my firearms, my Henry BBS .357 Magnum carbine, and my Ruger LCRX .38 Special + "P" revolver. Vic had not tried my new Henry yet, and agreed with me that it is an accurate straight shooter. I hadn't shot my revolver for over two months, so spent time getting back into that groove. Although I had a plus 2-month hiatus from my snubby revolver, I shot pretty well today....just a little rusty. Put about 50 rounds into a standard silhouette paper target today, with a variety of .38 Special + "P" JHP ammo. All off hand shooting, and some one-hand shooting, too.
But my following Range Report has a different flavor today, and I'm not reporting either of my two firearms. Instead, I tried out two of Vic's new long guns. And there was very, very little shooting --- but it was really fun!
Vic bought a new Henry .45-70, and I posted some photos of that beautiful rifle last May http://henryrifleforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2787. I got to try it out today. I've never seen this caliber ammo before, and was blown away at the size of the round. It was a large as my thumb! Seemed actually larger that the shotgun slugs I shoot. Anyway, we loaded in some rounds and set up a 2" orange target at 35 yards. The rifle has a Nikon scope mounted, so we shot off a rifle rest (not my cup of tea). Vic shot the first three rounds, and I then shot one round --- and quit! Here are the target POIs and the story.

Yeah, I can hear a few mutterings like "why did you quit shooting after one shot?" Well, like I've said, both shooting a rifle off a rest, and using scopes, are not my forte at all. I always use iron sights and shoot off hand. That good 'ole Nikon scope decided to thump my nose really good at this one shot!!! Putting my cheek on a stock using a rest is really awkward for me, and ended up that I simply had my face too close to the scope. The .45-50 rifle recoil was not bad at all, to me quite similar to about a 20-gauge slug shot, and easy to handle. The "scope recoil" was another story. I quit just to save my glasses and my nose from being re-arranged.
But I'll take that .45-70 POI --- it was fun to try it out today. Now I can easily see why so many Henry Forum members enjoy shooting their .45-70 rifles. It is an excellent firearm & caliber.I got to try out another new long gun he just recently bought, which he uses when he's on duty for his guard service. {Recently regular KCMO police officers were approved to carry 12-ga shotguns now while on duty, as long as they are a pump. Semi-auto 12-ga shotguns are to be used only by SWAT units. OK on that aside}. Vic got a new 12-ga Mossberg 590 A1 for work. It has the heavy barrel, and is parkerized. Really a very nice pump shotgun. He got a model with a picatinny rail mounted, and has put a Tru-Glo red dot sight on the rail. So I tried that optic out. I stood at 40 yards from a 3" orange target, and this time shot off hand....my cup of tea! I had to "find" the red dot by drawing in my sight from off the board on the right side to the bull. I was more than pleased with the two POIs I landed when shooting this Mossberg with a red dot for the first time!!

'Twas a very enjoyable range time. BTW, Vic said I can shoot this Mossberg whenever I'm at his range. That is definitely my cup of tea.....yeah!Hope everyone has a good weekend.
