.308 Long Ranger report from WY

Post by Tweet » Fri Mar 24, 2017 1:26 pm

Snow finally cleared to get to my property and was able to break in my Long Ranger. I broke the barrel in with factory Hornady Custom 165 gr Interlock ammo. I shot 1 round, cleaned it, then repeated this for a total of 12 times. Then shot 2 groups of 4 rounds each. I did not have a camera with me so I do not have a pic to show. I then tried some factory Hornady Superformance 165 gr SST to sight in my Leupold 2.5 X 8. I was throwing bullets all over the place so I stopped! This past weekend I went out again (with a camera this time) and shot some factory Hornady ELDX 178 gr ammo. What a difference! Attached is a group of 3 at 100 yards and minimal wind at my back. The Long Ranger seems to shoot the best groups after 5 or so rounds through it without cleaning it. I was able to shoot these sub MOA groups all day long!

Nice POIs on those groups. Looks like you have the .308 under good control.
I've read quite a lot on the ELD-X Hornady ammo, which sounds like impressive stuff.

Thanks for the report, PT. Have never used that ammo. May have to give it a try. Still hoping to get that gun in a 223, though.

I have had one on order for almost a year. Seeing this report makes me hope I get it soon.

nicely done .... with groups like that you will quickly find the ammo your Henry likes and get it sighted in to whatever point you wish
