First shots from the Winchester 32-20 and my pig target comes to life!

Post by fortyshooter » Sun Sep 21, 2025 8:33 pm

I was shocked to see my steel pig target start walking around just before I started to shoot! :o  :o !! All setup and I turn around and see that big porker. Didn't know if friendly or not so I fired off both barrels of my 20 ga. Coach gun at the ground and he/her/it never flinched and just wandered around finally leaving my area on down the driveway. A lot of ham and bacon moving around!

Anyway got my mind on shooting and the Winchester 1892 in 32-20 shot really well and didn't have to touch the sights....that little blade 24 inches down the barrel is tiny in that little rear sight notch! I started off with the Black Hills ammo which was the hottest at 1150-1185 FPS with 115 gr.cast bullet. Next was some rounds of the HSM Cowboy ammo clocking in slightly slower at 1050-1068 FPS. Both shot well on my targets out to 40 yds. and then to 80 on the gong in the woods. Paper target not bad from standing position at 30 yds. trying to hold on target.

The fun began when shooting the small steel critter targets and had those flying around except that BIG fat one!

Then pulled out my S&W Model 686 Plus 7 shot to take down that outlaw target with DA point shooting from 10 yds and not too bad with hot 158 gr. XTP rounds. Plus a finish off shots with the 20 ga. Coach gun to put the bad dude away for good!

Really was plinking fun with that 32-20 Winchester and will have it out again soon when the companion Cimarron 32-20 six shooter arrives.

Looks like you had allot of fun.I have a mod.92 in 32-20 also but I have't shot it in years I've been debating whether to have the barrel relined or not it is pretty dark with only a hint of rifling.
Should of made some bacon 😃.

How well does it shoot? I have another one in .44-40 and the barrel is very pitted and rough but there is rifling you can see. With a .430 sized bullet and Red Dot or Unique it shoots a very good tight group! It did not like shelf ammo like HSM with a .428 bullet size.

Sounds like a good deal of fun was had.
The pig in question, looks like a pot belly, not sure how tasty those are or aren't.
And a good looking 92 you got.

Great morning, looks like fun. I'm going to do some shooting as soon as the range dries a bit. Rained for three days so far, just enough each day to keep the range wet. Need to reseed after all the new work done there.

You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.

I don't look back at the things I can't do anymore with regret, I just look forward to the things I still can.

Thanks guys! Yeah that porker most likely came from neighbor down the road that has all kinds of farm animals and hope one of his bulls doesn't
wander down to my place! Really enjoyed the 32-20 and the Cimarron 6 shooter in 32-20 is on the way. Got my reloading dies in and some brass coming soon to make up some loads that shoot like the Black Hills ammo. MB 120 gr. coated flat nose bullet with 4.0-4.5 Unique might be one to try.
