357 Big Boy load work range report

Post by Hatchdog » Fri Jan 15, 2021 10:38 am

Yesterday I ran my laddered loads through my BBS 357 and found the sweet spot.

Hornady 358 158 XTP-HP
Win. 296
CCI. 550 sm pistol mag
Four shot groups
50 yards bagged from a bench. Calm winds 40 degrees.

Here’s my results with the five loads I tried. While none of the groups are terrible, well maybe one is, the lightest load grouped the best. All four shots touching.

I have about 150 cases prepped waiting for the charge results so I’m gonna get to-it. :D

Nice shooting Hatch. Ive never cared for 296 or 110. Ive always used 2400. But looks like you have that one dialed in with it.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I’ve never tried 2400 but plan to do so when I can find some. I’m not in a hurry so I’m not going to pay today’s stupid prices for powder from the local guys on the trader site. I’ll get there one of these days. :D

Looks good Hatch! Depending on what use the 12.4 is fantastic with just a windage adjustment. If you want more thump at 50yds. the 13.8 is a great mix of group and power.

Before I shot these loads I shot some factory 158 that I had used to sight in the BBS. I wanted to make sure I was on paper before shooting my laddered loads as I didn’t load any extras. I was happy my loads hit within reason and will fine tune the zero when I get more loaded. Always great to have a “need” to go to the range.

Agree with these guys, good shooting Hatch. Range time is always a good time. Keep after it!
