Range Report: Henry and Springfield

Post by Sir Henry » Tue Feb 18, 2020 6:58 pm

Another fun day at the range. This time I took two rifles -a Henry SGC and a Springfield Model 53-B made by J. Stevens Company. I paid $85 for it about two years ago.

The closest berm is behind the 25 yard line and the furthest (in the shade) is behind the 50 yard line. I wanted my targets to be in the sun so picked the berm in between and since I was on the berm I’m going to estimate the distance at 40 yards.

Kneeling I was getting okay groups with the Small Game Carbine. Good enough for rabbit but not squirrel. The one hole in the black at 7 o’clock is actually two. I need to raise the point of impact.

The Springfield has a Lyman 55S and Lyman 17 globe for sights. I thought it would be a good shooter.

I pulled those three away from the others. Here I was shooting Norma Tac22 and also leaning against the shooting bench. Much better ammo than the Winchester ammo in the Carbine.

I bet this rifle can shoot quarter inch groups at 50 yards. It can but doubt if I could.

I'm thinking of making a hood for the rear sight on one of my rifles as a test. Since the sun is facing me during my afternoon shooting I sometimes
get a glare when looking thru the rear notch sight. Thinking this might help keep the glare off the rear sight....something to try.

It’s deceiving because I was shooting 100 yard targets at 40 yards.

I really enjoy those old single shot bolt guns, too. Great guns for the money. Made serious rimfire accuracy very affordable. One of the best squirrel hunters I knew, back in the day, used an old 1940s vintage Marlin single shot for all his hunting. Only 22 he owned. He saw no need for the fancy, expensive stuff.

One thing that isnt deceiving is Gene out shooting again. Especially a couple of days close together. Nice shooting Gene and good to see the range reports coming from the home state.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Weather is going to be warm tomorrow so might make it a hat trick by going three days in a row.

Then it’s back to the salt mines.
