New from PA...with questions

Post by Workinman2 » Wed May 08, 2019 10:24 pm

Hi from central PA.
I am not yet a Henry owner but have been fondling them over the last year or so. Thinking of a BBCCH Carbine, prolly in 44 mag. It will be a deer hunter. Not sure yet about optics, the idea of a FWD mounted (scout)scope keeps coming into my mind. A standard scope mount with the 14" LOP I know will give me issues with layers of hunting clothes on. Cutting the stock is an option too, I just don't know if I can bring myself to do it. The wood that I have seen is beautiful. A red dot in lieu of iron sights is another option if I decide to stay away from glass. I would appreciate any thoughts.

Ive done both. But currently have no scopes on any leverguns as I just like the traditional look. Yet there are many guys on here who have scoped theres due to failing eyes as we age. I get that and someday may need to do the same. But for right now at almost 67 Im blessed with eyes that still function with irons. I do have a pump and other rifles with red dots on them. They work good and the red dot is a good way to go without adding alot of mass. Bushnell makes a TRS25 red dot that works pretty good for the money. I sure do like it on my Henry pump 22. Welcome to the forum from Colorado glad you joined us.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Welcome to the forum from KC! Glad you've decided to join us here and that you've got a new Henry in your sights (so to speak!).

There's a whole sub-forum on "Scopes" that's well worth browsing, and there are lots of scoped Henrys here used in a variety of conditions. I've hunted with a BBoy Steel and a CCH, both scoped and in quite a few layers, and never had an issue. Sounds like eye relief is your concern? Or that the LOP will be too long?
I've got long arms, so don't take my word for it.

I'll let others chime in, too, but I honestly don't remember many posts on folks using scout scopes. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened, though!

Welcome again.

Welcome aboard.
I have several scoped lever guns, and
quite a few that are not.

Unfortunately, I only have two. Centerfire is scoped, Rimfire is not.

Thanks guys for all the friendly "Welcomes"!
Yes, eye relief / length of pull are of concern. I have always had an issue with this regardless of scope make and or model that I have tried. And there have been more than a few. Finally, I ordered a Boyds stock for my Savage 7mm-08 with a 13" LOP. Love it! I honestly think I would be very comfortable with any scope on this rifle, layers or no layers.
The Henry keeps calling out to me. I think I am getting close. Do any of you guys hunt with the 44 mag? 30-30? Fill me in!
Thanks again.
