Re: Davy Crockett Smoker/Grill
after a bit of confusion centered around the fact that the FedEx place where you can take their packages for shipment is a drop box and not a store front, our first Davy Crockett smoker/grill was picked up at our campsite a few minutes and is now on its way back to Oregon .... a firmware update for the control computers in units like ours literally became available the day we received the replacement .... since then we've managed to download that update into our new one and it seems to be working well .... having been disappointed repeatedly by our first one, I'm trying to not get to excited but things do look good

Re: Davy Crockett Smoker/Grill
just came in from grilling hamburger steaks and hot dogs .... I'm delighted to be able to say our replacement Davy performed exceptionally well .... it was so nice to be able to walk away for various periods of time (actually 30 minutes or so) and come back to find it maintaining its set temperature ..Cool .. if it continues to perform this way, it will more than take all of the drama we experienced with the first one

Re: Davy Crockett Smoker/Grill
a few days prior to leaving South Dakota and heading home on Sept 18th we grilled/smoked chops cut from a pork loin .... we fixed enough to have meat for a couple of nights during our drive home .... I then thoroughly cleaned our Davy Crockett smoker grill and totally emptied it of pellets .... yesterday we removed it from our camper's basement, set it up, reloaded it with pellets and smoked to larger than average racks of baby back pork ribs ... when we packed it in the camper it was performing flawlessly .... to my complete surprise, during the rib smoking, not so much .... the temp range it maintained was much to large ... the ribs really turned out well but required me to spend much more time closely supervising it than I like .... today I went out and removed all of the innards looking for a part that might explain the gap .... every part was mounted correctly .... that left me with the option to reset the computer control unit .... doing so is a very simple operation .... push and hold the food button and plug in the power cord .... continue to hold the button until the computer begin counting backward from 999 to 000 .... I then set the temp to 250 and burned Davy for over an hour .... during that time it performed flawlessly .... hopefully, he's once again good to go for a while

Re: Davy Crockett Smoker/Grill
Pizza Oven Mod ....
the Pizza Oven we purchased for use in our Davy Crockett Smoker/Grill was covered in a post on page 7 of this thread .... in our experience it is an very good idea but comes up a bit short in execution .... in the first picture below the opening in the oven into which you insert a pizza is shown .... simply put, it is too narrow .... its just short of impossible to slide the peel with a pizza on it into the over, much less angle the peel to where you can slide the pizza onto the stone ..... the second picture shows the dome removed .... the third shows the opening after I spent a while modifying the dome's opening .... the fourth shows it mounted in Davy, the difference is easy to see .... the numbers came up good in a test run .... the following pictures show the temp of the grill beside the corresponding temp of the pizza stone .... per the owner's manual, the stone's cooking temp should be between 650 and 800 degrees .... today's test shows we should be able to fine tune ours to determine what works best for us .... we hope to give it a try tomorrow night

Re: Davy Crockett Smoker/Grill
Doing a test run myself today. Recently bought a slow cooker and I'm trying a baby back rib recipe. I'm cooking more these days.
Hope your Pizzas turn out as you expect.

Smoked an 11lb Boston Butt on the Jim Bowie for 18 hours on Labor Day.
It came out awesome, just look at that bark. Tender juicy and delicious!
