Didn't know where to put this so I figured I'd put it here. Apparently pinfire cartridge firing shotgun pistols are not firearms just like black powder guns. In the youtube video linked below this guy got confirmation from the BATFE about this.

This is an interesting idea with lots of neato guns that could be built using this. Apparently since the NFA and GCA only bring up rimfire and centerfire ammo guns that use this are not subject to any of their restrictions. Shotgun pistols, short barrel shotguns, short barrel rifles. The sky is the limit apparently and I think it'd be cool to see modern repro pinfire guns.

Casimir Lefaucheux is credited with inventing the cartridge system in the 1830's and patented 1835. The firing pin is built into the cartridge itself sticking out where the rim would be. It was very popular in European countries in revolvers, often times containing more than 6 shots. Howdah pistols and shotguns were common in it to.

Re: Pinfire guns
Lemat had pinfire grapeshot revolvers out at the same time as the percussion guns, though I think the shotgun barrel stayed percussion across all variants.

Re: Pinfire guns
This is an early version of a center fire pocket pistol that I have that is an updated model of it's pinfire look alike brother. Only difference from this one and it's predecessor pinfire is the fang hammer and the cylinder. There are no notches in the side wall of the cylinder where the pins of the pinfire cartridges would stick out. Also instead of the hammer striking the pin of the cartridge where it would stick out of the top of the gun in the cylinder the hammer fangs the center of the cartridge. This specific center fire model was made in the the 1870s and 1880s. Has folding trigger and takes a 7mm center fire cartridge that I haven't been able to find.
