.54 Cal projectiles availability
.54 Cal projectiles availability
Looked for projectiles for .54 TC white mountain carbine. Very little out there other than round ball and sabots which don't seem to perform that well in 1 in 48" barrel. Sign of the times everything appears to be for .50. I am saving some hornady plains bullets,TC maxi hunters and TC maxi-balls for hunting seasons but it is frustrating. Traditional firearms ammo in ,54 and .58 is definitely on the way out. Casting own bullets is an option but not sure it is worth the investment. Ordered some round ball with the proper sized patches to try again. I may have used the wrong patches previously.

You might check some of the classifieds of the muzzleloader forums. Ive seen the Hornady Great plains bullets on there for sale quite often. Among other bullets.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Re: .54 Cal projectiles availability
I am in the same position with .54 & .58 calibers as I have always preferred the Hornady Great Plains bullets and am down to four in .54 and a couple boxes in .58.
I have found some other conicals available online but hadn't really gotten serious about them - yet.

Re: .54 Cal projectiles availability
I hear ya on the 54's, been hard to find for a while now.
I ended up buying a Lee mold a couple months back, I did try it one afternoon.
Made about a dozen, but I have yet to try them.
The mold says 380, but I believe mine came out a little heavier.
Probably be a while before I get around to trying them.
If you like I could send 'em to you to try.
I don't mind.

Re: .54 Cal projectiles availability
Thanks so much for the offer. I did watch a video today on bullet casting. It looks like one can get set up for around $150 or so. I'm not sure I need another hobby at this time. I probably have enough of the types I like to hunt with for the hunting years I have left, if I don't use them on paper. I do have a .50 cal hawken which has a ball gun twist and shoots hornady conicals and round ball really well. I also have a .50 inline for sabots but I prefer shooting the traditional guns. Will try the sabots and rounball that are coming this week and see how they fly.

Re: .54 Cal projectiles availability
Hey Vaq thanks for the follow up and I see you have the solid base mold.Hey Ed,
If you DON'T mind sending me a few of these I would like to give them a try anyway.
I was hoping to see hollow base but who knows? These might perform as well or better.
These are .54 Cal. correct?
